357 Mag powder for Rifle
« on: January 24, 2009, 08:56:04 AM »
I want to load the 357 for the Handi or a lever.
I've seen several threads here with loads on GB with the following powders listed
(Unique - 231 - 2400 - H110).
I want to shoot cast target (lower vel) and also work up a good stout deer/pig hunting loads with a jacket soft point.
Will one powder do both well. I'm new to reloading and have read that unique is a dirty bird in the mess it leaves?
Any thoughts on the powders and mag primers not being needed for 357? Thanks. -gary

I've had good luck with HS-6 for my reduced loads at about 800 fps, 148 grain cast wadcutter.
These are out of my .357 MAX handi, but loaded in .357 MAG cases. I am playing with reduced loads in the MAX case, but have not yet had time to get to the range much.
For my thumper loads I am using mostly Lil' Gun and 180 grain jacketed, but plan on going entirely to 200+ grain cast bullets in the very near future.

I have 100s of 357s loaded for probably 10 different guns.  None of them use a mag primer.  Most use WSR, WSP or Rem 7 1/2 primers.

My plinking loads are 5.0 grains of Unique, 158 cast bullet, WSP primer.  My cast bullets have either Orange Magic lube, or a Tamarack lube on them.  I have not had a problem with dirty barrel or action using Unique.

I have looked but not found my rifle yet.  Someday I hope to find a long octagon barreled lever action in .357 mag.  I will run WSR primers, a healthy load of AA#9, and the RCBS 180 Silhouette bullet or the LBT 200gr WFN.  Both are gas checked bullets and should take deer size game out to 150 yards without problem.

Just a nickles worth of opinion....

Out of a rifle barrel, I like Winchester 296, with a good crimp, and magnum primers for heavy loads.  Red dot, along with standard primers works well for light target / plinking loads.

My Marlin 1894C absolutely shines with a Hornady 180gr. HP/XTP and Lil'Gun powder.
For cowboy action shooting I use a 125 grain truncated cone cast bullet with Unique.

Slufoot, Have you used your load on any four hoofed critters?
If so, what were your results? -gary

I have only taken one deer with my 1894C and the 180 XTP - Lil'Gun load. I get 1550 FPS with my load and the XTP didn't give an exit on the broadside shot behind the shoulder. The deer ran about 75 yards after the shot. If I take it deer hunting again I'll be using a Remington 158 JSP handload.

GOOD SHOOTING!
