Questions about a newly aquired 20 Ga Pardner
« on: January 25, 2009, 05:29:55 AM »
Hi all, First post here, great site yall have. I just purchaced a new 20 ga. pardner, many years ago I had an H&R topper in 16 ga. and theres something about a single shot that has drawn me back. anyways, I have a few questions about the gun I thought I ask. Does anyone make a recoil pad for these that would fit without doing any grinding or fitting, will the stock ones from the larger ga. pardners fit?
This has a modified choke, can I shoot slugs from this gun or is the choke to tight, probable wont do so but I'm curious, also can these barrels be threaded to accept screw in chokes or would it be more cost effective to by a different barrel?, I bought this gun primarliy for small game hunting but now I'm thinking maybe turkeys in the spring. Thanks, Craig

Hi
You can shoot slugs from a modified choke. I prefer a Polychoke to screw in chokes Poly choke has a web site. My opinion is with a poly choke you have all your chokes with you all the time. Probably a hair more expensive  for a $100.00 shotgun  but to me it's well worth it.
They will shorten the barrel too. I fine 21 inches a nice length. I have a 20 also and would not trade it.

Slugs are no problem in a modified choke. I have a 20 gauge Pardner with screw in modified choke and I get 4 inch groups at 50 yards using the bead sight and cheap Remington Sluggers.

As far as turkeys go I would pattern some ammo with your modified before you decide to get it threaded for choke tubes. Try some 3" steel shot loads first. These pattern tighter than lead from a mod choke almost like it were a full choke. I was going to get a turkey choke for mine last year but I tried some 3" Remington Wingmaster HD #4 loads
through my factory mod choke and it threw a nice pattern out to 30 yards. That's as far as I like to shoot turkeys anyway. If you want more range than that it would be more cost effective to just get another full choke barrel.

The factory recoil pads are hit or miss if you can find one. It may or may not fit because I believe the factory does grind to fit also.
You could always buy a butt stock from H&R that already has one if you don't want to do a grind to fit.

Thanks guys,
Foggy, i have been looking at the Poly chokes and they look like a good option, I'll try Doublebass73's suggestion of useing the steel shot, sounds like a good idea. I took this gun out yesterday afternoon to do some squirrel hunting and I was so impressed with it I may just sell my big Mossy and get a  12 ga. Pardner Turkey gun.

Woodsroamer,

I had one of those 12 gauge Pardner Turkey guns. It shot VERY nice at long range. The only reason I got rid of it was my shoulder can't
handle that much recoil anymore which is why I went with a 20. With the factory X-full choke and 3 1/2" Rem Nitro #5 turkey loads the pattern was incredible at 40 yards. I never tried beyond that but I wouldn't be surprised if it was still throwing a nice pattern at 45-50 yards.

Doublebass73,
I imagine the recoil with  12 guage in 3 1/2" would be pretty feirce out of a light gun, I might have to re think that,  like you, my shoulder aint what it use to be. I was surprised how nice the 20 guage is to shoot, even with some high brass 2  3/4" #6 the recoil wasnt noticable, I imagine some 3" might have some bite.
I meant to ask before about the steel shot, does it cause any wear on the barrel compaired to lead shot?, I've never used it before and was curious. Thanks, Craig

Yes, the recoil is indeed very fierce out of that gun. I'd still have it but my shoulder told me to get rid of it. Shooting patterns at the range was not fun. You would need a lead sled to make patterning those things enjoyable.

The 20 is really nice recoil wise. You lose range but I'm willing to make that trade off for comfortable shooting at the range. The 3" shells do have a little bite but still very tolerable.

I imagine steel will wear out your barrel faster than lead but you'd have to shoot a lot of steel shot through it to wear it out. A while back Wally World had some 3" Remington Wingmaster HD #4 loads
on clearance so I bought a bunch of boxes. These supposedly don't wear the barrel as much as steel. Try some standard 3" lead turkey loads, too. Every gun is different.

Since I started using my pardner 20 ga my 12 ga guns are pretty much safe queens now.I bought one of the last tracker 1 barrels for deer hunting and I have a full choke barrel  that I use for turkeys. My best turkey load is a 3inch loaded with #4 shot. This gives me excellent patterns out to 40 yds, and the recoil, tho stout is quite manageable. The slug barrel will shoot Remington sluggers,5 shots into a nice 3inch cluster at 50 yds. Who could ask for more?

I'll try and get some 3" steel shot and lead turkey loads and do some patterning this weekend, hopfully I can find some, ammo in these parts is real slim these days.
FLNT4EVR, sounds like you got that full choke barrel shooting good, I'll have to keep my eyes open for one when funds permit.

My 20 ga. Pardner is my go to shotgun for everything from small game to deer hunting.
I lathe cut it down to 20" and scoped it with a 4x Simmons.
It will still shoot birdshot great out to 30 yds. or so and will put 3 Sluggers into a baseball size group at 50 yds. You can't ask much more out of a $100 shotgun. ;D
I just traded off my 12 ga. Pardner barrel because it was just collecting dust.
The 20 shoots so well I just don't see the need to get beat up shooting the 12 ga.
The only 12 I have now is for home defense. ;)

You can't beat a 20 ga. for woods bummin' ;)

This hunting season I decided to use my 20 ga for everything. I have the standard pardner, 26 inch, mod choke. Grand total for the season is 134 ducks, 11 hogs, 80-90 squirrels, around 40 quail, around 12 pheasant, over 100 doves, 1 turkey, and 1 deer. The hogs and deer were shot with slugs. It has been a good season. ;D

Thanks guys. I had almost 60 days of leave and was hunting every day on Ft Sill. During the week there is no one hunting because they all had to work. The deer, pheasants, and most of the quail were shot when I came home to Kansas.
