.30-40 Krag in Marlin 336 frame

This thought came to me last night..I really like this round, recently rechambered a .30-30 Handi -rifle barrel for .30-40 Krag.  Has anyone tried to do this with a Model 336 Marlin. I know the action is long enough since it's used for the .45-70. With the new flexitip bullets, the .30-40 could really be a barnburner, especially since it handles heavy bullets so well. Thoughts?

30/40 is about 1/4" longer than the 45/70 and with the longer bullet is too long for the 336
however Marlin did about the same thing with the rimmed .308 (.307 Win.) same capacity as the 30/40 but it didn't sell well so was discontinued.

The 30/40 is a great round in a single shot rifle. I had a contender barrel once. It was a rechamber from 30/30. Should a kept that barrel.

The #3 rugers were great in the 30/40 as well and you didn't have to worry much about pressures. Regards

Actually, the maximum overall cartridge length of the 30-40 Krag is 3.089", or more than a half an inch longer than the 45-70 Gov't.  Through extensive modification the Marlin 336/444/1895 can achieve the reliable cycling of a maximum of a 2.75" cartridge.  So to use the 30-40 Krag in a Marlin would require limiting the cartridge overall length and hence its ballistic potential.

If you want more potential than the standard 30/30, the 30/30 Ackley Improved would be the better choice.
