Doing it again
« on: January 25, 2009, 07:13:38 AM »
As many of you know I was previously in the Navy. I figured that I should let you all know that I am now joining the Army. With the economy as it is right now I just can't pay the bills and live on basically nothing. I leave for Oklahoma on the 17th of Feb. I will be there for almost five weeks then off to Fort Gordon, Georgia for 18 weeks. At least it will be warm in Georgia! But to answer the question of another thread on here I will not go door to door taking peoples legal weapons. Because that would mean I would have to give up my own and that just isn't going to happen. I already told my wife that I am getting a black rifle while I still can. No if's and's or but's about it.

Actually it was just a matter of the navy recruiters being down in Connecticut (probably at the casino) when I drove an hour and a half to the recruiting office. I didn't want to drive down there for no reason so I talked to the Army. I am not picky one way or the other so it really didn't matter what branch. You are right though the Air Force is a whole lot easier, but they probably won't get too stirred up because they generally know it. Its not like someone can complain about getting paid the same and doing less. ;)

I about LMAO.  Yeah the Air Force is considerably different than the other branches and they definitely know it.  Nothing against people in the Air Force, but it is what it is.  While I was in Kuwait we could occasionally go to an Air Force base to call home.  It was a special treat because where we were on a Navy & Army base we had no such luxury.  The air force guys had air conditioned trailers and were getting some kind of substandard living pay while we were sleeping in cots inside of tents with 60 other guys smelling like feet and farts.

Aside from my wife and child my proudest moments of my life have been in the Army.  You won't regret it.

Yea, the Air Force is different.  They require high scores to get in.  They won't take just any warm body.  They teach you a useful skill and actually let you work on stuff.  Most to the time you see your wife and kids everyday, & you aren't used for target practice.  It's different in all the good ways.  I wouldn't even think of joining any other branch of the service.

Let me see if I get this right.  Feel free to correct me, I'm counting on it.

Yea, the Air Force is different.  They require high scores to get in.

Is that supposed to mean that everyone in the other branches isn't as smart or incapable of high test scores?

They teach you a useful skill and actually let you work on stuff.

You should mention that to the mechanics working on the helicopters, tanks, humvees and everything else out there.  Those mechanics are highly sought after in the civilian world because they learn to make machines work without always being in a shop to fix it up.

Most to the time you see your wife and kids everyday, & you aren't used for target practice.

I'll admit it, I've taken friendly fire in my home state during the two weeks of annual training from artillery.  It's a risk, but nobody ever sings songs about that brave guy in the rear having an icecream sandwich.  When people think of troops they think of guys that show some bravery and self sacrifice.

Next time you're pinned down by enemy fire, look up.  That Gunship is up there killing more bad guys than you can shake a stick at.

We were visited by some Army helicopter mechanics one time in my shop.  They needed some parts.  They were amazed that we actually worked on the engines.  It seems they weren't allowed to touch the engines.  They had civilian tech. reps. that did all their mechanical work.

I think all the branches of the service are great.  I just happened to serve in the best branch & the best wing in the history of mankind.

I've got nothing but love for the fighter pilots and others who sign up to go up to the front.  I do tend to disagree with the guys who signed up for jobs in the rear with the gear then thump their chest about their service.

I completely agree that we the best Air Force, Navy, Marines, & Army in the world.  I think most guys will go to the grave knowing they were in the best branch.  For me, I'll always be loyal to the Army.

I think I will keep it the way it is. It's how people know me so why change?

And to answer the other question... No I am not going artillery. I am only going to Ft. Sill for the Warrior Training Course. I am going into the signal corp. for now. I am hoping to change later to MP but for now it is what I am stuck with.

NLD,
MP's?  Are you kidding?  The MP's that I know really hate their job.  Most of the time that you aren't deployed you spend on the gate, riding around in cars for 12 hours a day, dealing with jerks with attitudes and spending 14-15 hours on duty.  PT in the morning, then report, then guard mount, THEN 12 hours, then clean and return weapons.  I wouldn't be an MP if they gave me a promotion tomorrow.

Air Force - hmmm, I resemble that remark.  21. 5 years and still counting.  Yep we have higher test scores to get in.  Smart folks in other services, yep.  I've been joint service for 17 years, my last three assignements have been on Army posts.  My first assignement was on a Navy base.  I've worked for and with folks from all services.  All have their smart folks and there "snuffies".  Doesn't change the fact that the score requirements to enter the AF is higher than the other services.  Yep, we get AC and fixed facilities most of the time.  Look at the placement and function of the bases.  Air bases aren't mobile and aren't designed to be.  Once we open and air field, we intend to stay for a while.  If we were infantry, artillery, combat engineers, Marines etc, then we would probably be moving to another position in the not to distant future so we wouldn't have time or money to establish semi-permanent facilities.  The AF has a different mission and skill set than other services.

Y'all have fun,

Thanks for your past service Navy and best wishes on your coming service.
Hey, all this "branch bragging" gets a bit nostalgic, doesn't it! If the Air force requires higher scores to get in, such is a rather moot point. Most all of us could easliy handle the entrance exams for most any branch.
I was Army, but I realize it is not the only branch! My brother, who served in the Navy on the battleship USS New Jersey during the Korean war, clearly admits he made his choice based upon his lack of desire for a foxhole bunkhouse and a liking for warm meals... :D
The branches have changed since most of us old guys were in and having observed both Army and Marines in recent years, I must admit that the average Marine is probably a few steps ahead combat wise than the average GI..but that difference disappears with the higher level combat arms such as Airborne,Spec Ops, Special Forces, Rangers, Seals and recon etc.
I believe the real prestiege dividing line is not between branches, but between combat arms and support troops. I remember as a tanker, carrying a little chip on my shoulder..

OK..I'll duck now, while you hurl your brickbats.. ;D

That's exactly what I did for five out of ten years in the Navy and I loved it. I even like sitting on the gate. You can catch more people drinking and driving sitting on the gate than you can riding around in a patrol car. I don't know what it was about the job but it was just for me I guess. I do have to be honest though. Everything you listed is what we did except the PT part. The Navy doesn't seem to know the meaning of the word. I hope I am happy with my decision but regardless I only have ten years to tolerate it.

Thank goodness the AF doesn't need it...  If I had energy I would expound on my theory on the type of supervision needed for junior enlisted in each branch.  I've developed it over 17 years of joint service.  So far, pretty much everyone agrees with me on it.  Maybe tomorrow...

Not sure what all this has to do with Navylawdog joining the Army. Combat troops don't get far without Support troops and Support troops need Combat troops or they don't have anything to support. All take hits, even if of different kinds, and all have moments of glory - All are needed...

I was in the Army with several previous-service enlistees from the Navy and the Air Force - ???? We were all in a leadership training class together and we all passed... Hmmm, 40 years ago this month

Navylawdog - Best of luck with your choice and choices for your future!! I appreciate you!! Hope you get computer access now and then and drop in for cup of java and conversation. You will be missed if you are absent for long.
