Moose Hunt w/Griz on the Side -- Sourdough Suggestions?
« on: August 25, 2003, 04:40:20 PM »
:D Looking for some advice/comments from those who've been there and done that...

I'll be up North hunting moose 8-20 Sep -- I need a break so bad from work I can taste it.  If the moose aren't responding to calls, does it make any sense to still-hunt through the woods or is that simply more likely to scare them off?  Am I better off just waiting them out and hoping the rut kicks in?

If we use the tracked vehicle I was thinking about taking along my tree stand.  I figured if we take a moose (wooded area with large meadows) I could set up a tree stand in the afternoon for griz, hunt the evening, sleep in the stand, and then hunt the morning.  Your thoughts?  Thick, smooth, tree...and a restless night I'm sure...

Been busy Matt.  I have been shrimping, fishing, camping and repeating the same over and over.

Without examining the area.  Up on the Yukon the sloughs that joined the river all had well established trails on the ridges.  Moose tracks were plentifull and the possibly of using a treestand would have been good.  Both of the moose I shot were killed late in the evening, near last light.  A grizz and a blackie moved in on the two moose kills within hours/days to claim them.  Try to hunt a funnel  just like deer hunting if you can.  There were grassy areas that the moose fed in and usually willows around the edges.  So a stand might help there, back in a bit.

Sleeping in a treestand is interesting. Falling from them is even more so! I have to hear the story when you return.  I once sent 18 hours in a stand and got hypothermic from doing so. It took me about a hour to get my core temp. back up.

You might try a predator call for grizz. Dying rabbit. Like this spring on Saw Mill.  A moose kill is better though!  Be careful! You might have more than one move in on it. I think a stand here, about 50 feet up would be great! There might/might not be trees in your area. There are certainly trees in Alaska that are huntable from as far north as the Bering Coast and Coldfoot.

All our beers over here now smell like fish.  Saw a great blackie on Sat. only two miles down the road. Got a pic from 20 yards.
