Big government and the economy?????

I am curious as to "the peoples opinion" on the economy. It appears that the mainstream media cries "help us Obama". And it appears that Obama and most of congress feels that more and bigger government is what is needed. What are your thoughts?

Government is a drag on the economy. Todays thoughts that if we spend money we don't have,which just adds to the debt, that it somehow will end a recession is a myth. You have to create wealth, which is done by making whats needed from raw materials. Pushing papers around won't do it. We must get back to our manufacturing base. If its not already too late? IMO.

My thoughts are just common sense. Government does not produce any economic goods or generate any income. Therefore, anything that they do and anything that they spend must be provided by the private sector. These are drained resources that will no longer be available for consumers to buy goods. Less can be consumed, thus less will be produced and people will loose jobs. Also, it is money that could be saved becoming loanable funds to provide needed capital for industry. If Obama creates one job, it will pull resources from the private sector costing at least one job. Anything government does is a drag and the bigger the government, the greater the drag on the people and the economy.

Had the government just given 2 trillion dollars to actual taxpayers and let the businesses that were gonna fail, fail we would already be on the way back to a prosperous economy. And if not at least we would have our money and we could do no worse with it than those fools!

That would just be giving back to the tax taxpayers that which they must pilfer from them, minus government costs.
 
In 1920-1, we had a crash as deep as the the great depression. The government cut spending by 1/3 and cut taxes accordingly, and it was over in a short time. In the 29 crash, both Hoover and FDR tried to manipulate the economy and it resulted in a prolonged depression. Banana Ben thinks they didn't manipulate enough. Of course, the most powerful branch of government, the Federal Reserve (a private entity), is not going to let their fellow banking buddies fail (pass the cost to the people).

You are right, it would have been about over by now had they let the "correction" correct the malinvestment caused by the Fed's manipulation of interest rates and money expansion.

Hello All,

   We can talk all we want about Capicity Utilization, Inflation Rate, Federal Reserve, Etc. Etc. but the whole things boils down to $$$$$. Who really runs this country....Two political parties, that's who. And where do they get the wherewithall to run the country ($$$$$) ...from PAC lobbies. If you have enough $$$ to buy enough elections for your primary (Vote my way) congressmen or senators, you get what you want. Our government is so screwed up at this point (both parties) that the only solution is to get back to the basics, the Constutution, The Bill of Rights, and The Declaration of Independence. I think The Decleration of Independence would apply again today. Tea-Parties are not Tea-Parties, they are American Citizens telling Washington to clean up your act or else.........Egypt, Yemen, Libya.....

The government is like one of them big crew cab pickups with a 6x8 foot bed....4x6 foot bed....4x4 foot bed
3x3 foot bed...see what I mean?  The load to pay for running the truck is getting smaller, while the weight of the truck is getting bigger and taking more gas.  :P 

Analogy #2....We have a giant oil tanker that's broken its rudder and it's headed for the rocks...the captain looks around, sums up the situation and says, "I know, I'll give a speech!"......"a great speech!!!!!" :o
