5mm Remington Magnum RF Handi barrel.
« on: January 26, 2009, 05:32:54 PM »
I've been posting about this barrel on the CF board because it is ment for a CF frame.  It is an off-set bore stub project barrel chambered in the 5mm RF mag cartridge.  I have fired it and finally gotten the ejection problems solved, it is 21 inches long.  I have to put a barrel band on it for the forearm lug to attach to, but all that I will have to do is sand blast it and put it in the parkerizing tank.  I am real curious how it will shoot.  Larry

I am willing to be amazed if it shots the new ammo well. If it does, I want one.

I have probrably shot close to 700 rounds of the new ammo out of my Model 592 and after getting the scope problem fixed it has proved very accurate and shoots under 2" at 200yards it has for the most part taken over for the 17HMR for me ammo is still at $15 a box though. Kurt

I'm lucky to get 2" at 100yds. in either of my 591's. !/2" to 5/8" with old ammo. I have been told I may have a defective batch that the factory is aware of. I haven't attempted to verify it yet.

Congratulations!
However, this begs the question: Why doesn't H&R do this? Might be quite a coup, as the other manufacturers don't seem to be in any hurry to make a 5mm rimfire.

Well the only one you know about anyway. Some other enterprising machinist might have do the same somewhere out there. But as hard as ammo has been to get for so long ya just might have the only one.

The one problem I found with doing these in a Handi is that the ejector has to be very precisely machined to support the bottom of the case.  The 5mm RF runs much higher pressures than a 22 Mag or HMR so it will blow out through the case any place it is not supported by the chamber.  This leaves the cutout in the Handi rifle as the weak link, so the ejector has to fill the slot nearly 100%, no gap in front of it or behind it to the breach.  I think next time I would just cut the chamber with the ejector in place to get a perfect fit much easier.  Larry

I could see Remington bringing back the 591/592's before they went the H&R route. Kurt

That would be the rifle to bring back, I have a really nice 581 that someone spent some serious time tuning up, the trigger is perfect, the finish on the stock and metal is great and it shoots better than any .22 I have ever had.  I think this series of rifles was probably the best mass produced RF bolt rifle ever built.  I also have a 592 that is converted to a .22 Hornet.  Larry

I shot it today, put 40 rounds through it with no problems, no blown or split cases, no stuck cases and every round fired.  Accuracy was medium good, I shot at 50 yards with a 3-9 scope from sand bags, standard Handi trigger.  Groups were 3/4 inch horizontal and about 2 1/2 vertical, the picture below is a 5 shot group.  The two shots that were low sooted up the cases, about 1 in five did this with this batch of ammo, so I am thinking this is what they are talking about with the first run of ammo being defective.  The vertical stringing could also just be the typical Handi being fickel.  I think it would be just fine with a little work.  Not much else to say, it shoots and didn't blow up so life is good.  Larry

Case extraction tripped-up Remington when they first developed the 591-592 5mm Magnums.

It took a while for them to perfect the unique extractor systems on those rifles, and I seem to remember Remington delayed introduction of the models for a while because it took longer than expected to work out the problems.

The Remington extractor consists of a type of sliding sleeve that sits in the chamber and helps the bolt's extractor remove a fired round.

I wonder if other manufacturers are finding this is a problem as they work to develop a rifle for the 5mm for themselves.

This little round compares favorably to the .22 rimfire magnum and .17 rimfires, so it would be worth it to the shooter if they do introduce new models to utilize this great little cartridge.

Having read both threads I'll hang on a while yet. Maybe try a box of laterr manufacture. Too bad shipping ammo wasn't such a pain, someone could get a real good deal on first run stuff!
