44mag on SB1
« on: January 27, 2009, 09:36:56 AM »
I am in the process of getting a 44 mag barrel off of the classifieds.Since H&R will fit them to any SB1 frame does that mean it would safe for me to put it on my SB1 frame?I am just curious because the 44 mag pressure is considerably higher than a 12ga.

Older sb1 frames have a larger firing pin hole. There seems to be an issue with this. Think i'd stick with an sb2 frame or a new for the 44 sb1

I'd shoot it with factory ammo and see if you have primer flowback into the firing pin hole.
If not, I'd use it.

Just to satisfy MY OWN CURIOUSITY I just put my 44 mag barrel on my Topper Deluxe (SB1) frame and shot a Remington factory loaded 240 gr. hollowpoint to check for primer flowback.
There was NONE.
The primer looked EXACTLY like when I fire it on it's own SB2 frame.

I'm not telling anyone it's OK, I'm just giving my results so please don't start flaming me.

I called H&R last week to find out the particulars about fitting 357 and 44 mags to SB1 frames.
I was told by 2 CS reps that they were fitting them to SB1 frames made from 1987 on.
They also told me that neither barrel was in stock and orders would not start filling until "early spring".

I hope this helps.

That's great news ;D
Like I said, I called last week.
Maybe that's a good sign that things are moving along quickly now.
Thanks for the update.
I want a 357 mag in a bad way ;)

Just for info, the 44 mag was offered in the original Shikari SB-nothing frame.
Don't worry about the SB-1.

Don't send in the Shikari, they won't do it. The Shikaris were all H&R rifles, not h&r 1871 rifles.

Well....glad to hear they're fitting 44 barrels to SB1's. I have a 20 ga Ultra slug that I don't use anymore. I have an extra set of straight grip camo stocks that I can put on it and send it in for the 44 barrel. I only wish they would change the twist to 1 in 20.
