Turkey - Public Land
« on: January 27, 2009, 10:50:19 AM »
The next season to open is turkey, one of my favorite things to hunt.

Anyone have any luck with turkey on public land?

Don't tell me where you go but do you have any technics that you need to change due to the higher hunting pressure?

The reason I am asking is I found an area where some birds are roosting on public land a few weeks ago.  I am confident I am not the only one that knows this spot and was hoping for some ideas on how to get them to come to me and not the next guy.

Pattern the birds early prior to the season but never call them. Figure where they go mid to late morning and then again in the afternoon.   Use a decoy(s) and call very little in one of the spots they frequent. On pressured birds I very seldom use more than a short cluck or a very lite yelp and stay set for a long time. Don't expect the thundering gobbles after the first week as they get call shy and quiet down , but they are still around. Most of the other hunters over call and leave early so be patient, stay later and let them come to you.
Deer hunting is mostly fun then you shoot one and it turns to work.
