NEW & HOOKED
« on: August 26, 2003, 04:38:46 AM »
We are always looking for something new ( Our nature is more ). I'm an Old Rifleman that has shot BB Gun all the way up through the Cannons - had to experience things. I've owned pistols in 22, 41 Mag & have a 45 APC Auto now, but never favored them to the rifles. Was always aware of the T/C Contender and other like Handguns. Then I started reading here -  HOOKED!

I also like all Cartridges - but some better than others, a personal choice for each of us ( Select fit for shooter and situations ).

Something very new to me as I read and read, eyeballs strained for days - LOL. So many great Post ...... then a lot of information from XP-HUNTER. I'm in the process of purchasing an ENCORE for my son that we will both shoot until I can afford another ( Grandson will shoot as well ).

The first barrel will be 16" in 6mm Winchester .243, the basic .308 Winchester Case, excellent accuracy, flat shooter, bucks wind, and delivers energy to distant targets. Flexibility, long range target, varmint,  deer size game out to 200 yds - easy to shoot well because of low recoil. There are many cartridges that perform the same, .243 is just an old favorite of mine - along with a few other cartridges - but I like them all.

My experience is mostly rifles, but reading here is about to send me into a new adventure - I understand and already feel the addiction so often mentioned in the post -  I think I want to thank everyone - LOL.

Has anyone shot the .243 out of a 16" or so barrel ?
Is .243 a flame thrower out of that length barrel ( Excess powder used for lighting )?

I've never had a .243 handgun, but in the early eighties I had a Remington rifle with an 18" barrel.

With 4350, the blast was significant. The flash and blast were a lot more manageable with the faster powders for that caliber, such as 4895.

You will be in the Encore.  I have shot contenders and while there is some recoil . . . it is not hard to get used to.  Enjoy it!

When you get your barrel in you will find that there are quite a few guys on this forum and others like it that have or have had a 243 Win.  I would use your rifle data and go with the medium to slow powders listed in the loading manuals.  Personally, I haven't had much luck going with the faster powders for a given cartridge.  Looking forward to hear how your Encore shoots when you get it going.

xphunter:   I've been setting around awaiting an e-mail reply from VVG ~ I'll have to get on the phone to get things moving. Shooting this Encore will be something new and fun ... shooting it well will be a challenge. Another barrel later on for stoping a charging 50 gal drum - LOL.

Wish I could find a picture that I seen earlier - a round set off at dusk with a flash that lit up the area ( Not something I necessarily want though - but a neat picture ).
