here in germany, we have to kill certain numbers of boars, sows and piglets.  If you want to shoot the sow, you have to kill the piglets first.  I still think that killing boars is crazy.  If you want to control the population, you have to shoot the females to stop the reproduction.  Leave the boars, kill sows, kill piglets.

That's why I started hunting hogs with my AR.  I can't get every one, but I can usually drop 2-3 if there's enough open country.

If I had some around like that I would name one,porkchop,

  Pretty common in south Texas too. They keep the lbs under 150, and usually sows, good eating size. Larger hogs are avoided with the AR's and for good reason. I was hunting a ranch in east Texas and had a AK-74 converted to .223 and it failed horribly with FMJ, soft points, and hollow points on larger boars. I loaned the guy my .280 Remington Handi so he could get some meat. 2 shots 2 kills with the .280

Using the .223 on hogs is all about bullet selection and shot placement.  Neck shots with 55gr Sierra GameKing soft points going just over 3100fps does an effective job on even the big hogs.  The advantage of the AR is that if you don't get a perfect shot that first time, you can have a second or third if necessary.  A friend shot a big boar with his Marlin 44mag.  Dropped it in it's tracks.  We took off after some other hogs and came back to his, and it was gone.  I had the AR and a hog....he had a good story.  Sometimes they're hard to kill even with the larger calibers.  I think the 44mag is pretty effective, but sometimes it's not....so goes every other caliber as well.  I just like the AR because it's light, handy and I carry all the ammo I need when I'm far away from the vehicle.

yep, I have two nice bolt actions, a 270 and a 308
but for hogs I take my 6.8 AR (also have a 5.56)
I killed a few deer with it this year as well
mine has an 18" barrel and I am getting 2800 fps with the 110g tipped Barnes
lights out and it will cleanly punch through even big hogs through the shoulders (from numerous reports)

ya' know on second thought with pictures like that... If a guy wanted to cut the number of hogs on his place a semi-auto 12 gauge with 00 -buck would probably work really good on those piglets.  You'd have to bury'em, there wouldn't be much to eat but I'd think you could get 4 or 5 in the confusion.

In a situation like above I have had success in downing one of the sows first. When its a bangflop the other sow will usually run off, but if there is food on the ground the piglets keep coming back for food,  rooting all around their dead mama.   I ahve been able to take two sows and six piglets this way on two occasions.
