Overall length with Winchester 9mm FMJ HB?
« on: January 27, 2009, 05:24:39 PM »
I have 1,000 Winchester 9mm full metal jacket, hollow-base bullets.
I plan to load these with a variety of powders, in search of the most accurate load in my Browning Hi-Power.
Winchester's website does not list an overall cartridge length for this bullet.
Any ideas what OAL should be with this bullet?

I haven't loaded for the 9mm is years but being that its a mag fed firearm. You have a limiting factor in that mag and the throat in your barrel.

There is a std OAL for the 9mm. Search case dimentions 9MM. You do not mention the weight of the bullet? You need that to get your powder charges and also your OAL. I believe its about 1.170 or so.. But its easy enough to check. Remove your barrel and drop the dummy's in to see. Them run them thru the mag to check function.

Measure out a factory load with a similar bullet or adjust your seating die to the overall length of that factory round.  Mikey.

Bullet weight is 115 grains.
There is a great disparity in overall cartridge length (OAL), even among bullets of the same weight. This disparity seems to be dictated by the powder used. I've seen different OAL listed for Unique, Bullseye, 231, Blue Dot, etc.
That's why I asked.
I've read that the 115 hollowbased FMJ has its hollow base not for obturation, but to give it the same length as the 124 gr. bullet.
If that's true, then I'd need to find the OAL for the 124 gr. Winchester FMJ, presumably.
I'm about to load 950 cases on my Dillon 550B progressive press, so figured I'd ask.
I'm shooting a Browning Hi-Power, incidentally.

Personally, I look at a couple things when establishing O.A.L. from scratch. I just did it with some 45Colts and brand new bullets. I had to turn a canalure on them. (They where not designed for use in the Long Colt) So O.A.L. wasn't a big concern. My other variable was case cap, I knew these would be top velocity bullets. So keeping the bullet long for larger powder capacity was the priority. I am loading these in a single shot rifle, so they didn't have to worry about functionality thru an action. My limitations where the throat and leade in the barrel.

We need a safe amount of the bullet in the case. Simply for bullet retention and cartridge stability. I mean you don't need the bullet falling out from a little bump. So say 1/8" min. Now load one up with a no primer/powder. (dummy Load) Now go function test it. Will it fit in the chamber with no resistance? (Remove the barrel and insert by hand.) Will it run thru the mag? If so, load up a mag full and try it. For a load, start at the lowest load and move up slowly. Remember, with pistol powder a little goes a long way. Its fast burning.

I also just picked up a HI-Power. I haven't loaded 9MM's in forever. Matter of fact. I had to pick up another set of dies as I seem to have lost my last set!!!

I load to a COL of 1.12 for the 6-8 9mm pistols I own. Just work your load up using that length. My ammo has worked well in any pistol I've run them in, including my Hi Power.
