Either would fit, but the BC is generally a open site barrel. You could always scope it, just most don't. The higher comb of the ultra stocks would likely negate the use of open sites...

I would go for the 22" barrel myself.

Recoil depends on what you feed it. ;)
45-70's can screw you into the dirt with stiff loads or you can load it down to almost no recoil.
All depends on what you want.
That's the best thing about a 45-70... Versatility.

I like your idea of using the BC bbl. myself. Plus, you already have a 26" 25-06 tube on the platform why not stick with the long stuff on that rig?

That provides an excuse to start another outfit for your stubby stuff!  ;)

Fitting is covered in the FAQ's. But if you run into problems, someone will be here. If you see the light on, just knock and come in.  ;)

The BC barrel is too long & heavy.  It wouldn't look good IMO.  Why not get the 24" stainless?

I've never played with the ultra stock and forearm, but on the Buffalo Classic the 32" barrel makes for great balance.
I like having the longer barrel with the 45-70 for history sake, but either should serve you well.

Recoil will depend on the loads you shoot.  Factory loads are pretty mild on recoil, probably nowhere near a 300 mag.
If you handload you can go from "mild to wild".  I've shot some stout loads and they can give you a pretty good kick.
Buffalo Bore ammo makes some loads that are hot, and they can kick like a mule.

Depends on your personal preference, but a stainless barrel on a blued frame doesn't look all that bad IMO, specially with a nicer stock.

Because frame and barrel tolerances vary too much, the only way they could offer OTC barrels would be to develop a new frame with tighter tolerances so drop in barrels would be possible. Even if they improved the tolerances for barrels, it wouldn't guarantee a good fit on all frames. If you want a drop it barrel, you'll need to spend more money and buy a TC or CVA.

An unlicensed person can ship a rifle to the manufacturer for repairs or in this case, an accessory barrel, and they'll return it to you, no FFL is required since you're shipping it to an FFL and you already own it, there's no transfer of ownership.

I agree with Tim, I have two stainless barrels on blue frames and they look very nice.  Another consideration is do you want an ejector or extractor?  I don't know if it is correct or not, but I have read in several places that there is not much performance difference between the 22 inch and longer barrels with straight walled ammo.  Any input from anyone on this would be appreciated.  Thanks.

Depends on the load Pete, I get 150-200fps more velocity in the 32" barrel over the 22" with 350gr bullets handloaded with a couple powders that I tested, but not all gave that performance, H4198 only provides 25fps more with 300gr bullets in the 10" longer barrel.  :-\
