« on: January 29, 2009, 05:32:30 AM »
I am new to casting and am looking for a good tumble lube cast bullet and load for hunting deer  with a 308 handi.  Any recommendations?     Thank you Dean

I've used Lee Liquid Alox on several bullets NOT designed as tumble lube bullets. It works quite well to over 2100 fps in the 30-30, .308 and 30-06. I like a flat nosed gas check bullet for deer hunting. Any ACCURATE bullet from 150 to 200 grains should do fine for you. If you do not have a 30 caliber mold ,I'd get the Lee 170 grain if $$ is tight.

My experience shooting game with a hard cast 30 cal. bullet was much like using fmj's, if you didn't hit bone the bullets would just pass thru with little or no expansion, anyone else ?

Yep, that's what usually happens with hard-cast bullets.

That's why I like to use a .44 or .45 flat-point when using hard-cast while hunting.

With the .30s, I like to use softer-cast bullets with a hollow point.

I use ACWW for most of my hunting. On occassion ,I'll go with Lyman #2 alloy if I think a harder alloy is needed. With calibers like the 45-70, a softer alloy than air cooled wheel weights might work better. I have used Linotype and monotype for varmints and targets at long range and/or high velocity. Lino and monotype will definetely act like an fmj and poke a small hole thru a critter that does NOT kill it. Often they are accurate enough for head shots though! IF you can afford it , the 311041 is a GREAT cast bullet for deer. and can be shot at 2100 fps+ in your handi.Cast from straight ww alloy,AC , WD,or heat treated
