The swede has a little more case capacity. Loaded with the same bullet, to equal pressure, the swede will have a little higher velocity.

I just missed out on a TC Encore with a 24" 6.5x284 barrel today.  It was short money and I just called too late. :(

IMO, The best reason to go with the 6.5x55 is that it gives you a real good reason to get a M96 Swedish Mauser!

If your looking hard  at the 6.5 Swede, and you want to shoot "barn burner" loads (that's assuming you handload), then you may want to consider buying or "building" (ie: a Savage action) the 6.5 on a "modern" or new action. The new actions can handle a bit more pressures than the older Mauser actions. Some of those Mausers (like my own military that is in original condition) are 100 years old.  I also have a 6.5 in a modern action.

I'm loading some 140gr. Berger's for my "Modern" 6.5 that will push 'em at 2725fps. Now, there is no way I'd shoot these loads out of my military 6.5. BTW, There are no signs of pressure at this velocity, and I may be able to get it a bit faster, but I just wanted to hit the 2700fps number and call it "quits".

And it is a great place to call it quits!! A 308 with a 168 Berger at 2,700 will not be nearly as flat, esp. past 500 yds. & will drift a good deal more in the wind & even if you can push a 308 @ 2,800 (difficult) you still have the same story, those high BC 6.5 bullets are great.
You will not make peace with the Bluecoats, you are free to go.

Blue\Wood is a classic look and you can't ever go wrong with that.  And then, stainless is also good lookin too!!

I wanted to share this link I found.  This person did a lot of work with different .264 bullets in wet newspaper.
I have to say, the Barnes TSX is pretty impressive. chart on page 2, and pictures on page 3.
