Slugs and smoothbores

I picked up some slugs today at wally world to try out in my new 20 ga. mod. choke Pardner. All they had were some Winchester 2 3/4"  3/4oz hollow point rifled slugs. Will these be safe to shoot in my gun? Last time I bought slugs was back in the 70's and there wasnt much choice, just want to make sure I have the right stuff before I pull the trigger. You can shoot slugs out of your 20 ga. just fine.
Try some Remington Sluggers out of it, they shoot great in mine and alot of others.
You might be surprised at how well it'll shoot. ;)

Those slugs and your gun are a great match. Try them and then try some other brands (Rem Sluggers are a great slug) and see which slug you gun likes best. Godd luck, good shooting, and have fun....<><....:)

just wanted to doublecheck and make sure these are alright to shoot, with foster, rifle slugs and sabots to choose from its kinda confusing.

You will like shooting slugs from your 20ga.  I took a deer out about 60 yds a couple years ago with a smooth bore Tracker I 20ga and Remington Sluggers.  Some have said they thing accuracy is actually better out of the Mod choke than with a cylinder bore.  I am not that good with just the bead sight shooting slugs so I never tested that theory.  Good luck and enjoy.

One of the great things about shooting a smoothbore with slugs is they use and shoot the inexpensive Forster slugs best. Don't waste your money on the high dollar sabots out of a smoothbore. They do not shoot well out of a smoothbore and you don't need them. Some have reported great luck with Remington Buckhammers. I bought some to try becauswe of what I have read here about them but have not shot them yet. Thay are more expensive than standard Forster style rifles slugs  but less expensive than Sabots, also, between Brennekes, Remingtons, Winchesters, and Federals (in that order), I have always found something to shoot well out of my smoothbores....<><....:)

I wish H&R /Remington would start making Tracker 1 barrels again.I was lucky enough to get 1 of the last ones, I'm sure they would be a big seller in the accessory barrel program. Many of us hunt close and realy don't need rifled bores or expensive saboted slugs.The Fosters work just fine for the ranges we shoot.

But then the ammo/gun companies can't make money off of you by forcing you to buy a rifled barrel and $2.00-$5.00 rounds of ammo to feed it. :)

All kidding aside, the way the ammo companies are starting to get on the lead free bandwagon has me a bit concerned about the future of foster/full bore lead slugs.  I guess time will tell.

Went out squirrel hunting this afternoon and had a chance to shoot a couple of these slugs when I was finished. Boy was I surprised, I paced off about 45 yds and shot at a knot in a old dead oak tree. Shooting offhand the first shot hit about 2" to the left, perfect height. Once I realized the recoil was minimal I made a relaxed second shot and it hit between the first and the knot. I bet this thing would be deadly with a scope at 100 yds. Now  if I can get some turkey loads to shoot as good I think my Marlin 30-30 and Mossberg 835 will be sitting on the bench next year ;D

Bring back the Tracker I and you won't be able to keep up with demand!

But then again, the barrel accessory program hardly looks like a money-maker.

So I guess the solution is to convert my 20 gauge modified choke into a Tracker I?

Who makes iron sights that fit my 20 gauge modified barrel? Would it be too much to ask for a peep sight?

Now there is a small cottage industry: Imagine all the bead-sighted pardners out there, sitting in closets, just waiting for their chance to shine as born-again, slug guns!

Are you kiddin'??  That's not too much to ask and a great idea.  I think the Williams WGRS base is the one you would want.  Not sure of the front sight height, but I think there is a formula in the FAQ to help there.  My idea, if ever there is $$$ is to put a fold-down rear sight(Marlin lever gun style) and then add the OneRaggedHole kit to it.  I think that would be a great set-up for a shotgun.

Thanks for that link.

It checked it out, and it looks like I would need to have my 20 gauge, smoothbore barrel drilled and tapped, to install these One Ragged Hole sights. Is this correct?

Also, are these sights configured to fit the contours of my smoothbore 20 gauge barrel? And is there enough meat on the barrel to drill and tap for the front sight?

So many questions....

I've been shooting a few more slugs out this gun with great results, even killed a fair sized hog last weekend.

Kernman, I think you on the right track with adding some sort of rifle sights, I hope to go to Gander Mountain this weekend and run this by there gunsmith and see what could be done to install them.

I would let a gunsmith deal with it, but I found that a lot of people in gunshops know little or nothing about H&R products. One gunsmith I know was surprised when I told him my Topper 12 gauge could be switched out for a muzzler loader barrel.

This is not a knock on him, he's a nice guy. Its just that H&R seems to have a cult following; this site and a few others is the only place I can go to talk H&R products.
