Just thought I'd give a report on this since I couldn't find anything written about it myself when I was contemplating trying one.

I ordered one from Sportsmans Guide and it came in the big brown truck the other day along with a box of .32 ACP so when it came I inspected it and found it to be machined from steel and coated with a type of tough black coating and I tried to fit it into my chamber.

It would not go in all the way and stuck out about a quarter of an inch.   Not wanting to force it and risk getting it stuck I took it out and using fine grit emory cloth began to sand away and polish off the coating that was on the outside of the adaptor insert.

Fianlly had to insert a larger diameter borebrush into the adapter, and place the end of the brush into a drill and spin the adaptor while holding the emory cloth around the insert to finish the polishing.

Took me a while, but finally it slipped into the chamber with just a little nudge from the bolt and it locked up and ejected the way it was supposed to do.

That all done I headed out to my hunting property where I set up a target at twenty yards.

I sighted the rifle in with a couple shots, and it was impressive as the little cartridge put most all of my shots at that range easily into a spot I could cover with a nickel.

I then placed the target at forty yards and the grouping opened up a little to around four inches, with random grouping into the size of a softball.

I then set a large coffee can at fifty yards and put shot after shot through the can confirmed by the spinning can and sound of the round hitting it.

I then shot at some dirt clods out to a distance of eighty yards and hit around and sometimes did make contact with the one I was shooting at and the round didn't seem to drop any until I tried past that distance which I concluded would be beyond the practical even plinking range for the tiny cartridge.

All in all I was impressed, and it makes the old warhorse a viable survival weapon, as it can be used as a short range and not too loud 40 yard small game rifle, and by just ejecting the insert, you can then chamber a full house .303 round for taking down a large game animal.

Well worth the minimal cost of the insert, and the ammo although maybe not as cheap as .22 ammo I would still say it's not too expensive and pretty redily available.

I got where I could eject the insert, remove the empty case and load a fresh round without having to look at what I was doing, so it's a little slower than your typical single shot, but with practice it's almost as fast.
My culled down Handi's are the 45-70, and then I have a few others to keep it company...357 Mag/Max. .45 LC/.454 Casull Carbine, .243 Ultra, and 20 gauge Tracker II.

Thanks for the report, I've wondered too about them.

Check out this site for other adaptors for other calibers.

Awesome Jimbo.....I too ALWAYS wondered and numerous times had the "trifecta" of offerings from SG on the Adapters.  .303, 30.06 and 308?  I live and work within driving distance so I am always tempted.

Sounds a lot like shooting plastic .308 ammo ::):)

I've been trying to contact that company for about 3 years, and at first I wanted the 7.62 x 39 insert, but for whatever reason I emailed, called, and at various times and finally the last time I just gave it up.

Others have not had a problem contacting or getting him to return email information or answer calls, or so they say. ???

I finally got a cataloge in the mail, saw the insert offered in the add, and ordered it through Sportsmans Guide, so I hope you have better luck than I in contacting them.

I'm wondering if this guy has not become so busy that he makes his adapters for onlyone customer - Sportsmans Guide.  I purchased a 7.62x25mm, 30 Luger and 32 ACp adapters from him for my 06 and went back to order more and was never able to contact him or get a response.

Then I saw the Sportsmans Guide add and purchased 3 32 acp adapters for the 06 and one for the 308 (brother has a Contender).  Have not yet had the chance to go dig a tunnel through the snow so I can set up targets and shoot the adapters but when I shot them previously they were fairly accurate and a lot of fun.  Mikey.

#1). As said, THANK YOU for the info. Wondered especially since...
#2).  I bought the .22 LR in .22/250. A few shots soldered the adaptor into the chamber. I broke my cleaning rod (wood) getting it out. Extraction of .22/250 was not as easy. Crud on the case ned,  (Sako rifle.) Not to "thrilled" about that one. But seems jacketed bullets make a difference.

So .30 Luger is 7.62x25mm?  that sounds like a lot better round than .32.
Did you say you have one?  And if so how does that shoot?

Thanks

Accually the .30 luger is 7.63 x25, The soviet 7.62x 25 was copied from it, Not much diffrence but some, also I understand the soviet round is much stouter.

prairiedog:  Badnews Bob is almost there.  The 30 Luger is not the 7.62x25mm/30 Mauser round.  The 30 Luger is actually a 21mm long bottle necked case firing a 7.65mm or .310 diameter bullet typically 93 gns at about 1280'/sec.  The 30 Luger was the parent cartridge for the 9mm Luger/9x19/9mm Parabellum.  Georg Luger simply lopped the neck and shoulder off his bottlenecked cartridge to come up with the 9mm.

The 7.62x25mm Soviet cartridge is near dimensionally identical to the older 30 Mauser cartridge, which is based on the even older 30 Borchart cartridge.  The 7.62x25mm round fires a 85-88 gn .308 diameter bullet at about 1400'/sec.

I have adapters for both calibers for my 06.  Both shoot equally well to about 25m although I think the 32 acp adapter may turn out to be the most accurate.  I think I need to handload both the 30 Luger and 7.62x25 to something like the Whisper cartridges (heavy, very slow slugs) to get really good accuracy but, that's the fun of it..

The 30 Luger, 7.62 Tokarev, .7.63 mauser, and the .32 acp are all loaded with .308 bullets, at least the ones i've measured.  The Tokarev sometimes even has a .307 bullet.  The .32 acp shoots very well in my .308 Win. but not as well in my .303 B.  Not sure if the insert will take a .312 bullet in a .32 case but might be worth a try.

Has anyone tried the .30 carbine insert?
