SB1 223 ??

  So do i have this right ?

   They used to mount the 223 into a SB1 frame from the factory ?

Never to my knowledge, it has a SAAMI MAP of 55kpsi.

It ain't a good idea to fire a 223 barrel on a shotgun frame.
I've done it before and had to bang the gun over my knee to open it.
The primer was blown back into the firing pin hole and it stuck my gun closed.
I'm lucky the primer wasn't pierced. :-\

On the same note... I've fired 30-30, 44mag and 45-70 trapdoor loads on a shotgun frame and they all opened fine and the primers looked good. ???

I'm not recommending anyone else do it, just giving you my experience with it. ;)

If you do plan on using a shotgun frame for some of the rifle rounds... please take a look at SAAMI specs. for the round and use some common sense when it comes to cartridge pressures.

I have heard of a guy who has a 22 hornet on an SB1 frame, his reloads with H110 would make the primers back up into the firing pin hole. That is why he now shoots 35 grain vMaxes with 13 g of lil gun and has no problems now. He says this load shoot great too. Definitly not recommended to shoot centerfire on an sb1 frame.

A 32-20 stub barrel on a shotgun frame would probably work alright too. ;)
Add a set of green camo lam. stocks and a 4x Simmons scope and I bet it would be a good lookin' rifle too.
I bet it would even put 3 shots into a nice tight penny sized group at 50 yds.

I have a 45-70 purchased in 1992 or 1993, I cant remember now.  The paperwork that came with it stated that they would fit some barrels to it, but not others.   It would take barrels such as the 45-70, 30-30, 357, 44 mag, 22 hornet, shotgun barrels, and the 223.  They would not fit barrels such as the 30-06, 270, 308, 22-250 etc.

The 223 is the only accessory barrel I have ever ordered for it.

Now that I think about it I have never checked to see if I have a SB-1 or an SB-2 frame.

In any case, this may be why you think the 223 was available on the SB-1 frames.  The 223 is also available on the TC Contender for what it's worth (I am not sure how the strengths of the Contender and SB-1 compare).

The TC Contender frame isn't as strong as an SB2, it's not available in high pressure chamberings with casehead sizes the size of the 270 and 30-06, but it is stronger than an SB1 from the chamberings that are offered. But H&R won't fit any high pressure * marked barrel to any SB2 frame made prior to 1999(your 45-70 frame) as stated on the accessory barrel page. The SB1 frame is cast iron with no heat treatment, unlike the SB2 which is heat treat investment cast alloy steel.
