Retro Equipment
« on: February 02, 2009, 04:06:44 AM »
With the passing of my father a couple months back my bothers, sister and I have been taking possesion of some of his things. I recently got a hold of two of his most used fishing poles. One is at least a 6ft two piece glass rod with one of Zebco's very early spinning reels. I can recall during all my 52 years of life my dad using this rod and reel as his main fishing rig.
Yesterday I wiped the rod down took the reel apart and cleaned everthing up. I do need to get some new line on the reel but other wise it works great. So now I plan to leave the rig at my trailer by the lake where I can use it regularly.
Now I know there are traps and guns and fish poles that are old and out dated that should just be hung above the fire place.
But I also have traps I bought while in high school in the 70's that are still very serviceable. I use some of them ever season.
I personally like using old things if they still have use and function properly.
It may be years, maybe never that I decide to hang the old rod and reel up just for display.

My question is this.
How many of you use retro / old equipment out of nostalgia, or just because you can?

Mark, at our age(I am a bit older than you) we are retro--lol.
But there are some things I still use --not just because they are old--but because they still work well.
I have a few Blake and Lamb stoploss, that have to be older than me.I use them because they are still strong and work well.I do comment every time I make a catch in them--how well they still work.
I have a couple cork and wood decoys, that out perform anything made to day.
When you stop and think about it-- a lot of us older trappers--can still out perform a lot of the young bucks. Experience(old age) has a few benefits--but the older you get, the fewer they are.
As far as old zebcos go,I bet I have a bunch.A few old Johnson century's also.

What is scary about what RdFx said is some how that picture of you popped right into my head.  Sort of a Barney Rubble look only way wilder and shaking a spear LOL!

There are some things like meeting everyone through the internet technology that I have to say is way neat. I'm not afraid to try new gadgets and use them, Gortex is great.
But
I still like my old Colmen Stove and lantern that burn liquid gas. Cast iron fry pans with a metal spatula is the only way to go. I shoot all my bows, compound, recurve and long without a site or release.
I like it when my son says
"Dad why don't you just buy a new one?" of what ever that might be I'm using at the time.
I usually say
"Why this works just fine."
