The ONLY bullet needed for the round is the original a 40 grain JHP. I use Winchester and CCI depending on which one the particular rifle I am shooting prefers. Normally one of the two will do around an inch or less at 100 in any quality rifle.

I agree and it is the least expensive too!  There are too many choices out there for me to buy a box of each and try them out.  My 1960's Mossberg 642K shoots the CCI's well.  If the 40 gr. HP won't do the job, I have plenty of other caliber choices available.

I'v tried the 30 gr and it groups real well out of my gun  gives me a flatter trajectory and an extra few yards.

Worthless! At least that's been my experience with "ANY" of the 50g 22 magnum loads. they pretty much act like FMJ rounds when fired from a revolver, and not much better fired from a rifle. You'd be a lot better off on a coyote using what Gray Beard said. The old standard Winchester, or CCI 40g HP's would give you a better balance of expansion, and penetration. The hyper velocity loads using lighter bullets expand violently, but absolutely "will not" consistently make it through to the vitals on a broad side shot, much less on a less favorable angle.

Personally, I'd highly advise you to use a little more gun on a coyote. I know that a lot of coyotes have been killed with the magnum using a wide variety of ammo, but I've personally shot a bunch with it, and it performs pitifully compared to the next caliber up the ladder(22 Hornet).

The 22 magnum though, loaded up with something like the 30g CCI TNT HP's is the best "fox" rifle you can put your hands on. In 90% of the ones I killed with this combination, there was only an entry hole, massive internal damage, and rarely an exit.

If you have to use a RF then listen to GB, 40gr Winchester JHP, I use one in AZ, but I think 100 yards may be a little more than maximum.  You're Coyotes are bigger, I would try to use more gun.  Larry

I bought some CCI PSP "Game Points" but haven't killed any game with 'em yet. Noticed more recoil from my 9422M.
Heartily agree that 100 yds. is too far for reliable coyote kills with mag rimfires. Might look at an NEF Handi-Hornet at least.
I shoulder-shot one of our big Eastern coyote/coydogs the other day from 130 yards with a 32gr. .204 and he just trotted off, (laughing, I swear.)

Recoil from a .22 magnum? Is that a joke? We used to use it with rifle scopes with our TC handgun barrels for NRA Hunter Pistol matches and even with it 3" or so from our eye no one got hit in the eye as a result.

I have a bruised shoulder from the intense recoil from my 22 Mag, well if someone dropped from a roof onto my shoulder I would  ;D

Many of us have to use a 22 Mag as it's the most powerful rifle we can use on some public land. I use the CCI 40gr HP, I imagine it is very similar to the Winchester load. This round is certainly good for bobcats out to 100 yards. As always, shot placement is the key to success.

I hate to disagree with Graybeard but.
I do not think it matters what 22 mag round you use on a coyote out to 100 yards.  I think it does matter on small game.  The 40 grain kills them the 30+ grain hyper stuff explodes game.  Great on ground squirrels.  Big style points for the flips and blood fountains.  But that is not what you asked for.  So,
I would say shoot the round that I can get the tightest groups out of the rifle you have in your hand.
I have a bunch of the 50 grainers and could not get them to fly straight past 50 yards.  at 25 yards there was no expansion through a 2 gallon plastic jug filled with jello.  Just a strait 22 caliber hole.
We shot a bunch of the bullets at different targets to see if we wanted to give up a little accuracy for terminal impact and results.  All off the bullets entered and exited water mellons (found a guy on the way to the range selling them for $1 each.  $20 later we were ready for 22mag and 17 HMR bullet tests) at 100 yards.  Some had large holes on impact and small exit and others had the reverse.  All made about the same wound canals except for the 50 grain JHP and the 40 grain FMJ, just strait through.  Buy three or four boxes and head to the range to see what your rifle likes best and use those.
With me the CCI maxi mags worked best out of the Marlin 882 till Remington came out with the 33 grain ballistic tip.  The little SSI handi rifle likes the 34 grain winchester load the best but a slight 1/8" difference with the Remington allows me to shoot same ammo out of both rifles.

Let me see if I got it right:

50 grain and fmj = deep penetration with less expansion maybe accuracy problems   with  50 grainers
40 grain= good penetration, good expansion, good all around
30 grainers good expansion, maybe less penetration flatter shooting maybe more wind effects, maybe head shots achievable.

17 HMR maybe head shots best

Bottom line = all can do the job but bullet placement still most important.

Thanks all

Here's another vote for the Winchester 40 grain, for something coyote size.  I also feel the 22 Win. Mag. is a bit light for a coyote rifle at 100 yards.

When I first posted this thread I also figured 100 yards would be the absolute maximum with a well placed shot. As you folks verified, the 22 mag at 100 yards would be max and then only with a well placed shot with the proper bullet. I plan to keep my shots around 75 but would take a sure thing at 100.
I now plan to use my .50 muzzle loader for the longer shots, I'm probably good to 125- 150 yards with 225 grain bullets. When it warms up I will be at the range with all the artillery. Nothing like handicapping one's self but if I hit one with the ML it will stay down
This morning at zero degrees in these mountains with wind chills to -20. Think I will stay holed up

I agree with Jerry. The 22 mag. on Eastern coyote's at 100yrds is iffy with any bullet weight.
