I lived in Clovis NM for approximatrely 5 years back in the 60s, I did a lot of hunting with pistols and usuall wore them open.  Even though it was legal I was stopped more than once and given a hard time by some over zealous cop.  I didn't wear the gun just for the sake of wearing one, usually I was getting gas, stopped for lunch, or running to a store to pick up supplies while on a trip.  At that time I drove a canvas top Jeep so I didn't want to leave my gun unattended in the vehicle.

I remember going to a bar in Mayhill, NM where you were asked to check your gun before entering, if sober they returned it when you left but if you were a little tippsy you had to wait untill the following day to get it.  The barkeeper was also the local LEO.  This was also the prtactice in several other small towns.

Since I have experienced, first hand, some of the abuse you get from a(usually a young or rookie) cop I prefer to keep mine concealed.  I too think this would be a nightmare for the big city cops and draw more attention form the general public, many of which are opposed to carry of any kind............as I said, "just let the speeping dogs lay." ::) ::)

Don't stop now, the 2nd Amendment is gaining progress. Open carry is not the "Wild West". That is almost hilarious!! I haven't approached a vehicle in years, but, if I did, I would feel much better seeing the gun on your hip than seeing it, than rather an incident to search, if you were a felon, and finding it in your socks! Most law enforcement entities are for good folks being armed, just so ya'll know.......   Police enforce the laws they don't make them. They are told what to do, and they do it! Not all police officers screw a 12 gauge in your ear over a gun on your hip, in plain view! Oh, and as far as Austin, I have been "ignored" in regards to wearing a gun on my side. I live here and saw it daily. It has never been an issue.

Mohawk, I would agree. An armed society is a polite society as they say, and as far as armed citizens, I encouraged citizens to arm themselves and stop being victims. I encouraged them for all of a 20 year L.E. career, and still do.

Why is it that there is so much support by LE every time some new gun legislation is put forth? Seems there is always some statistic that shows a bunch of LE support for it.  Is it leftist BS or is there some descension in the ranks?

IF not descension are there some that just don't like armed citizens?

And can I quote you ?  ;D

LE opinion for any pending legislation is normal. An LEO "on the job" is just that, he/she is doing their job, enforcing the law that was passed by persons that were elected. Laws need to be enforceable, so the question is sometimes passed through LE to determine such. ie, the current seat belt laws, LE was questioned to a great extent. Texas LE is pro "armed good citizens".....where have you been?

Thats what I thought! and I been right here!

But the "media" always show some LE statistic that says they (the LEO) usually Chiefs that dont agree with that!

Now i know that I'm not the only one to see that...................am I ?

Don't worry about municipal police agencies and what they say. A city can not regulate the carrying of firearms per state law in Texas. Look to the capital. We have a lot of pro 2nd amendment, and pro hunting, folks that are currently in office at state level.

That's comforting, however what scares me is that a lot of these municipal folk get the ear of the national Govt. and we all know where we stand with those dudes.

And guess who the media will ask when the time comes to find out how LE feels about gun control. certainly not the guys that don't agree with their agenda!

But I worry to much, and I am way to cynical for my own good sometimes..............................NOT!!!

Don't worry. At least from the state capital through the US Senate we are in comforting hands in regards to honest folks defending themselves in Texas. Thank God!!! Senator John Cornyn, my former boss, got re-elected. He is a great man.

The why and how are diverse, often conflicting subjects.
I recieved a PM recently from one who was concerned how I did it before it was legal.
I guess that shows that it can be done successfully, though the number of folks shot, shot at, by others is also a way of telling that it has been done for years---and, years.
I have never had a guilt complex about carrying. I just found ways that it didn't show. I think this attitude of lack of guilt, is in retrospect, the key.
I never felt macho OR guilt.
I would still appreciate the BOYS not having too/getting too, uptight when the coat or windbreaker blows open, snags open or things of this nature, when carrying.
It is a necessary thing to do, I think.
Blessings

Oldshooter, the very best thing you can do right now is to JOIN THE TEXAS STATE RIFLE ASS. They will keep you VERY UP TO DATE, on what is going on in Texas as far as 2nd Amendment, and TEXAS LAW. They are very aggressive toward your rights here, and were very instrumental in getting the law allowing the concealed carry in vehicles WITHOUT a permit. They need our support.

Good point, Dee. I forgot about them. And Oldshooter, just to put it in perspective, when my grandfather retired from the Dallas Police Dept he received an engraved whiskey flask as a gift from the dept. This was not too long after the "law" once prohibited alchohol, nationally. Sure, you may have the occasional bully LEO, but those normally don't stay employed very long, just for that reason. Most LEO's are just doing what, the people that we are elected to represent us, are ordering them to do, and in doing so, are good public servants. I spoke to an old high school friend of mine that works for another agency, and he answered every single question and ended it with "sir". He did so being trained to respect every person, citizen, and criminal he encounters on a regular basis, and that includes old high school buddies!!! And that is very good training and I respect that. Most of us do. In short, many of us take an oath to love our wives, an oath to raise our kids right, and cops take an oath to try to make things a better place, because that's what citizens pay them to do. I have not seen one, not ONE, case of UCW(Unlawful Carrying of Weapon) by a CHL holder due to an accidental print or a coat blowing open. May have been a few PC(probable cause) questions asked, but never heard of a prosecution. I think most cops would just tell the person, once they are cleared of any warrants and a valid CHL card, to just "cover it up better next time".  ;)

In Va. you can carry open , kinda . If the city you go in is 100000 in population or more then no . Or the town or city has a law saying no . UNLESS it is for work ie; a vending machine operator is ok etc. . Its ok to go in a bar open but not concealed . If you do carry open in the bar you can't drink . this is all hand guns . for long guns you have to have a reason in some areas and others you follow game laws , so some times of the year its ok others no .
Clear as mud right ! Oh yea if you work for the bar you can carry concealed . even a service person like a plumber .
If ya can see it ya can hit it !

Brett, what are the definitions of concealed in NC?
Blessings

That's the rub William.  The law is very vague.

In North Carolina there is no State law specifically prohibiting the open carry of firearms. Under the theory that if it isn't specifically prohibited it's not illegal, open carry is possible. There are some glaring exceptions to this. They are:

   1. Private property owners and businesses can post "no guns."
   2. Firearms are strictly prohibited on state-owned property, except rest areas and state lands where hunting is permitted.
   3. Local governments can (and do) enact prohibitions against "display of firearms" in cities and/or specific areas within cities or counties, which means they can't be visible. Under this statute there is absolutely no requirement for the city or county to post notice of the display ban.
   4. Local governments can (and do) enact firearms bans on local government property and in parks and recreational areas.
   5. Any federally-owned property or federally-regulated property like banks and Post Offices is of course a prohibited area.
   6. Much of the Outer Banks is "National Seashore," and firearms are prohibited in those areas.

So in theory that leaves everywhere else in the state - except for one more thing. There is a common-law offense in NC called "going armed to the terror of the people."  Basically what this means is that if someone sees you carrying a firearm and calls the police to report "person with a gun," you can be charged with this offense. It's not often used in rural areas, but has been used in populated areas. If you are an out-of-state visitor who is not here lawfully hunting or engaged in some overt firearms-related event such as a competition, it will be hard to talk your way out of it.

So is open carry legal in NC? In theory, yes. In practice, maybe.  It seems to us like a very good way to get arrested.
