TN Hogs
« on: February 03, 2009, 12:06:11 AM »
Well this little part of GBO is awful quiet so I thought I'd post something related to hunting. Went after hogs this weekend and got lucky again. A couple of TN hogs I have taken in the last 6 weeks. In TN they live in the thick stuff and hill country, I envy the guys in FLorida and TX who can catch 'em in the open. Both of these were taken with my Tikka in 243, seems like enough gun.
First one dressed out at 125 lbs

Second one from this weekend, dressed out at 200lbs, much bigger despite how photo looks.

Here is a photo of their feet to show how much bigger the second hog is, I kept a foot from the other one as reference.

How do you hunt for them?  Stand, stalk, or dogs?  I used to deer/hog hunt in the Big South Fork 20 years ago but never saw any hogs during the daytime.  I used to hear them at night and would find plenty of sign during the day.

Our lease is in Fentress county so no dogs allowed. I either stand hunt or still hunt. They do move during the day, albeit less than at night. Wish we were allowed to hunt coyotes and hogs at night in TN, but I guess they're paranoid we'd be after deer. I got a couple of good eating little hogs last Feb in Big South Fork and could have taken the mama, but man it was a long way off the track. Who wants to haul 200lb+ of hog 1/2 mile through the woods and hills? A group of us are going to BSF again this month. The thing there is to get well off the beaten track and into the thick stuff, I doubt you'll see them in the open given the hunting pressure.

Victorcherley, where abouts did you try on BSF? A large group of us including Old Yard Dog are heading up the weekend after next. We shot a few last year, pretty much where the warden told us would be a good spot.

Wild hogs are really good eatin'!! Trust me on that, much less fat on the meat than store bought.

Sure is, we are going up from 20th to 22nd. We should meet up. We will be staying in a cabin 15 mins from the park. We will be 8 people, 7 from TN and one from PA. We'll have lots of food, come round for a campfire session.

We might just take you up on the invite.  It's just me and an associate, we'll be tent camping in the camp ground, eating Mountain House meals and peanut butter on crackers......

Where are you fellows finding hogs in the Big South Fork?

I didn't even catch a glimps of one on the way out met up with some more hunters they didn't see any also.I think it's just a hoax to get more money for the park??? Just joking maybe or not.I'm going to go next sat and I'll report then.hopefully the rest of the guys will have some better news.Thats the first time I have had the chance to hunt there. There sure is alot of area. But I also have alot of time to hunt to God willing.Ok talk to you guys later.

We were a group of 8 who went up Fri-Sun. Nobody shot anything but we had a great time. I had learned a lot from hinting there last year, the terrain was tough on everyones' legs!! Saturday saw the storm come in but my little group, including Oldyardog had found an excellent place. We found a little valley with very fresh hog sign either side, lots of rooting had recently taken place and the dirt in the roots was still damp. Sunday morning after the snow, we headed back to the spot and we saw where 2 hogs had crossed the path, near where we parked. Walking to our spot we found fresh coyote, bobcat and hog prints. Arriving at our spot we found a bunch of hog tracks, clean in the snow. After hunting an hour the tracks were already filling with more snow, so I know the tracks were extremely fresh when we arrived. Check out a couple of picks. I have sent Maximus the GPS co-ordinates, hope he gets lucky there next weekend.
