Ammo ?
« on: February 03, 2009, 10:24:13 AM »
I just bought a 1120 round case of 7.62X39.
I have no plans to use them just save them for  ???
Is there any reason I should or should not open the
metal (lead) sealer?

Thanks,
Mike

I would not open until you need them.  They are sealed from weather and moisture.

Like Dixie said, no reason to open them. Ammo in tins will last a long, long, long time.
In the big scheme, 1200 rds isn't alot and opening really shouldn't hurt anything, but why do it if you don't have to.

No reason not to, but if you plan on not shooting it for a while, It will keep better sealed up. Thats why its in the sealed can to beging with.

every reason not to if you are not going to use it.
many of those factories attempted to fill the airspace in those cans with inert
gas such as nitrogen. some even attempted to create
an oxygen free vacuum(sp). popping the seal starts the degrading effects of oxygen
on the contents.

Mike,

Total guess here but is it the Yugo brass cased on strippers?  40 to a box and 28 boxes to a case correct?  If so I can't recall if my hermatically sealed tins were still sealed or not.  I know the Yugo 8mm cases were SELDOM actually air tight.

Heres my opinion.  The Yugo ammo is FABULOUS ammo, probably dated late 70's and gorgeous.  Remember this IS corrosive.  Period (if Yugo of course) I shoot 1938 Turm 8mm with no hesitation on the primers at all, I shoot 1951 Yugo 8mm with no issue (a few double strikes) and countless other countries of old milsurp ammo.  So, if you open a can now and keep it in a cool dry enviroment ( I recall you live in a dry area) I see absolutely no reason this ammo would suddenly go "bad" in the next say...35-40 years.

Hmmmmmm, I have shot German 8mm surplus and Turk surplus (powder may be aged in turk) and have faired just fine.  Under what conditions were they stored??  Then put on a ship, slow boat to us to sit until sold to me and sat on the UPS truck on a 95 degree day.  It has faired just fine.

If your worried about it.  Open the case and then store the ammo in a 6" PVC pipe with caps glued on the ends.  Cheap and easy, can be buried etc.

Thanks for the .380 dies, they showed today.   PERFECT!

i would suggest you open the tin and place the ammo into surplus cans. it would be a real shame to open one up a couple years from now when shtf and realize that there was corrosion or something inside. i would inspect it and repack accordingly. you know what they say about assuming something is good - its only good until you need it. if you dont believe me ask MURPHY!

That is why I want to open it.
I have never bought ammo like this before
and just did not know if there is a risk of it being bad.
I see the benefit of leaving it sealed and thanks all for your responses.

Besides, its like a Christmas present under the tree ::)

It's been in the can over 30+ years already I have heard no complaints for anyone using it, or of the ammo being degraded in any way,as long as you keep it in a dry environment out of weather it will be fine as it is for many years to come, the corrosive primer is one of the things that helps ammo in long term storage.  I have cans of Bulgarian 54r from the 50's that when opened, looked like the day they were made.

It's the nature of the corrosive mixture used in the berdan primers one element being potassium chlorate the oxidizer which is more stable over long periods of time,it doesn't break down the same as modern day primer will over 20 to 50 years, the main thing is to keep it cool and dry.
