Asa in our estimation what is the best method to taint meat for bait, sun, bury it in the gound, cool dark place.   Does every method give you a different result?  I have some beaver and bobcat meat that i would like to get a slight taint on and i thought i woul get your opinion.  thank you very much in advance.   Corey

Corey:  I guess it wouldn't really make any difference, except that one has better control of how much tainting they desire when they bury it or taint in a cool dark place.  The best degree of taint, in my opinion, is to taint chunks of ground meat/fish until they are grey about half way through and still pink in the middle.  Then one stops the tainting at that point by adding 8 ozs of sidium benzoate per gallon of bait.  I do tainting in the Spring when the weather is still cool because I know from experience that about three weeks is about right.  I can adjust to a little less or more time depending on whether it is a warmer or cooler Spring.  Burying the bait is even better control, as one through experience can get the bait exactly the way they want it in this controlled environment.  As a rule of thumb, it generally takes a month to taint buried bait.  Be sure to use screen, cheese cloth or a tube running out above ground  so the gasses can escape during the tainting process, otherwise the bait jars will explode.  Don't bury any bait like this if you have a dog or wild animals in the area, they will dig it up.  Ace :-)
