Correct Slugs for 20ga. smooth bore M500 Mossberg
« on: August 27, 2003, 02:33:40 PM »
We've been through all this before, and I've told the story at least once before here, but here goes again!
I'm checking Midways http://www.midwayusa.com/ebrowse.exe/browse?TabID=6&CategoryID=9490&CategoryString=653+***+9217+***
on-line catalog for 20 ga. Foster/rifled slugs for a M500 Mossberg smooth bore barrel....What do I find?
1) Brenneke 20ga.  3" 1 oz. Magnum Silver Slug....for either rifled or smooth bore??????
2) Remington 20 ga. "Slugger" 2 3/4" 5/8 oz. rifled slugs..."for rifled barrels only" (per tech. notes)!
3) Winchester 20 ga. 2 3/4" 3/4 oz. rifled slugs.....for big game hunting?????

Can anyone tell me where to find the smooth bore barreled slugs????  I want to try a variety of brands to check for best performance and I'm having one devil of a time sorting out what I need to get?????  Is there a definitive answer to this rifled slug/smooth bore question? HELP!

The Remington Slugger and the Winchester Rifled Slugs are both Forster type slugs for a smooth bore.

Bullseye,
Yes, It would seem so, but again, are we being led astray by Midway's Technical Specification and Use information?  The Remington "Slugger" rifled slugs were listed as: Please Note:

Designed for use with fully rifled barrels only

I don't have my catalog right here, but Ballistic Products has a big selection of various types of slugs. ballisticproducts.com, I think.

Here's what Remington has to say about their High Velocity Slugger loads:

"Remington® introduces the first high-velocity Foster-style lead slug. This higher velocity slug exits the barrel at 1800 fps, 13% faster than standard 1 oz. slugs. The 7/8 oz. Slugger High Velocity delivers 200 ft-lbs more energy at 50 yards with flatter trajectory on deer than standard 1 oz. slugs. Produced in most popular slug loadings — 2 3/4" and 3" 12-gauge and 2 3/4" 20-gauge with a 1/2 oz. lead slug. Designed for the avid deer hunter using smooth bore guns."

I believe someone in the Midway Tech Department confused rifled slugs with slugs for rifle barrels.

I've always  had the best accuracy across the board with Brenneke slugs.
