Question for JJ
« on: February 04, 2009, 07:27:59 AM »
JJ,

Have you seen folks using the new Hornady DGX bullet?  If so, how did they perform?  As always, Thanks.

Ron

What are your thoughts on it's construction?  Steel case, copper jacketed, soft point.  That makes for an interesting combo.  I would think it would be more like a Failsafe bullet as far as expansion.  Which would put it between a woodliegh and a FMJ.

To few to form an opinion for me, what I have seen has worked as it should but It's so hard to form an opinion without much more experience.

It's much faster to sort out bullets and cartridges used with plains game because several hundred are shot each year. Hornady is a class act, and I have no reason to believe that they would make anything that would not have been well thought out and fully tested before they released it. This is not the case for many of the "prototypes" released by other companies.

This bullet is not going to have a solid following as quickly, because they  are designed for big stuff which does not get killed as frequently as smaller game. Until I see lots of use, I would not be able to form an accurate opinion.

Did they "open up" on hitting game? or act more like a solid and not deform much? in the couple you saw.....

None recovered, not all exited, but we could not find the bullets in the massive pile of organs easily. The construction is good, I don't see them anything like the failsafe bullets though. The Failsafe front was the same as the X bullet. Also these are not meant for much expansion, but rather bone crunching penetration. Not having seen a recovered one yet I cannot speak to this however.

Yes they are hard bullets, I bought some for my .404 with the hope of using them for lion. But just in testing them in Wet news print and shooting through my back stop made of poplar logs not a real animal yet they seem too tough for my intended use wish they made a Nozler pt in .423. Actually the Bullets measure .422 most likley because of the Steel copper washed Jacket? I will Stick to my .375 and my Trusty NP's
But it is real nice to Find bullets for my .404 :)I am shooting them at 2340fps I think I will just have to bite the bullet and toss in a Buff hunt too lol.
