Lee Loader for necked cartridges?
« on: February 04, 2009, 02:45:06 PM »
I've used a Lee Loader for straight wall cases before, but never on a necked case?  Anyone tried them, and if so, how well do they work without full length resize?

Thanks,
Ben

They work great for bolt action rifles. My first centerfire rifle was a surplus mauser that had been rebarreled to 308 and I started reloading with a Lee loader for that gun. It is a great way to get anybody started in reloading who does not want to sink a lot of money into it until they see if they enjoy it. I have since moved to presses with full length sizing capabilities but am considering another Lee loader for the calibers I load for now. (30-06 and 243-I sold the Mauser to my nephew).

I have two presses, and much equipment, but its not portable.  I want something I can throw in a bag if I need to and take along.  My 45-70 Lee Loader is convenient enough to take to the range.  I work up loads on the tailgate of my Jeep.  Once I settle on a load, I move to "higher production" at home.  Its also nice if I travel to be able to take my gear with me......

I loaded .30-30 for many, many years using a Lee Hand loader.
Never had a problem, other than an occasional primer pop when I was seating them.

Neck sizing works if you are shooting the reloads out of the same gun that the brass came from, and the gun is a single shot or a bolt. Other actions may work with the reloads, but not with any consistancy.
