how do you measure a dovetail?

Specifically, the front dove on a T/C Hawkin  15/16th barrel.  Am going to change to a tang peep this summer, and would prefer a blade front sight to the stock round top.  Thanx in advance...

Measure with the length of the barrel at the deepest point of the dovetail, It is probably 3/8ths...Ed

Enter  FS-D37-I  in their search. I don't like the front "bead" style either. This is as cast and needs finish work and bluing or rust. It kinda explains how they measure these things too

P.S. ya might need to a little file work on the "dove" base. But darn little! I've found it easiest to file the leading or insert side some to get it started. Then drift it in with a brass mallet or edge of a heavy brass rod. These things need to fit really snug, or all the barrel whip/muzzle pressure stuff will make it drift. And it'll drift at the "wrong" time. If it doe's drift after all your effort's, then get a 16th inch steel center punch and "peen" the top corner of the barrels dove onto the top if the blade dove, that'll hold'r in place.
 Does that make sense? some times I'm not a good explain-er..I'm good at "show ya" but that's hard to do on a www post board.
And I've never been too bashfull to take a file and knock down the hight of a front blade if it's shooting too low. I like my rear site to be in the mid-range of it's adjustment capabilities. I don't want it Maxed out because the blade is too tall or too short. Hurts my neck :(.

Thanks necchi, makes perfect sense.  Is that the one you use?  What size aperature do you use on your peep.  Is it a tang mount or existing sight mount.

I still use a rear open sight. I've played with a few peeps through the years, not real parshail too'm. As most of my compitition is off hand or in the field, I 've found target aqusition time just a bit slow for my style using peeps. I can't denie they are more accurate off the bench.
 I've used the above site on several T/C, because I prefer the slot style rear vrs V shaped. The near "drop in" size of this front blade makes it an easy fit, plus it's large enough to file down to what you want..you can even thin the sides down. I've tried brass and silver too. Brass can get ya in trouble if the light glints just right, silver kinda disapears for awhile in that dusk/dawn transition light. So I stick to iron for my target guns. If I know I'm going to be shooting in marginal light, I brush on a little White Out on the back of the blade..I can scrape it off with a knife blade. Iv'e gone as far as holding my barrel over a sooty candle just to take the shine off.

When I measure a dovetail slot I put two pieces of drill stem in the slot and measure between the drill stem pieces with a vernier caliper. The drill stem pieces are of equal size.  that way I can recheck and see how much I'm removing.  There is a formula to use when machining these.
