Knives Lookers or users
« on: February 05, 2009, 08:37:16 AM »
I buy 2 types of knives, some i like the looks of and really never plan to use them (but want them to be usable).
the others are the work knives that i will use, for what ever i need a knife for.
I have this thing about the short 23/4" to 31/2" skinner blades, and same size
drop point, i can make them do most any thing i need a knife to do.
I try to buy only U.S.A. made knives,But the other day i see these MUELA
knives on eBay  21/2" skinner and 31/2" drop point I ask the seller about them he tells me they are made in Spain and very good quality, i like the looks and
the seller is from Lubbock TX. things are good. I get the knives and they are very nice indeed, look and feel very serviceable, along with very nice sheaths.
These are nice blades, with stag handles, brass fittings, serialized blade

I'm not much of a knife person. I buy knives to use. I do have some bayonets that are just rifle decorations though.

Muela has a good reputation for making an honest knife. Obviously, their more expensive models are nicer than their cheaper models, just like Buck, Benchmade, etc.

I like good looking knives that are also users.  Never found a factory fixed blade that I like, Which is why I make my own, but do have some factory folders. I use good looking rifles also.  It's how I was brought up; you bought(or made) quality and you carried(and used) quality.

Here's some recent ones.
This one is in 154CM with my homemade burlap "jcarta" and copper trim.

Here are 3 in: carbon fiber/S30V, D-2/burlap, 154CM/denim jcarta

one in D-2/dyed moose antler

A baby bowie in 154CM and Ivory Micarta

and so on.  My signature line will take you to my public albums.  I do sell knives, but not at this forum, so you can PM me or e-mail me at casmircb@windstream.net if you want to talk about that aspect.

I put these together last week from some blades I had picked up from Jantz Supply. Both are deer antler handles, the bowie is a crown with micarta spacer and the small knife is a G-2 tine with a red buffalo horn spacer that sanded back to black with white streaks. I haven't polished out either one yet. The small one is a user with an oversized handle and the big one is more of a looker but could be used for the removal of the shoulders and hindquarters or skinning. The big one when shaped turned out to be very comfortable in the left hand but just does not fit my right hand or any of my friend's that have handled it. I'm a lefty so I'll keep it around for something.
Deer hunting is mostly fun then you shoot one and it turns to work.

Nice looking blades.  Those spacers add some class to them. I first started out making kits, then buying blades and my own handle material, them making them from scratch...it's a good way to learn. BTW, that red buffalo horn ALWAYS turns black. The dye only goes skin deep.

Yeah, that's a full tang Nessmuk.  Bob Engnath used to grind and sell those, and Morseth also made them. I modified their designs by dropping more the point more to the center of the blade to make it a bit more usable for non-skinning work.  The moose antler came from a Canadian friend who had to shoot one that was charging him; in fact it's his knife.

I like the baby bowie.  How long is the blade?
Does it come in wood scales as well?  And finally what kind of sheath does it have?

I have been looking for a new hunting knife.  Most of what I see is either too small for a general purpose knife or too big.  All seem to have sheaths that hang real low.  I like a high ride almost like a pistol holster.

The blades on those run around 5 inches. Many of the original bowies had blades around that length, since according to Rezin Bowie's daughter he designed this particular style as a hunting knife. I like to mess around with the design a little and make it in different ways with different materials.  My goal with this style is to get a great knife design back to useful proportions.  If you like to see other's I've done I can send my photobucket album link.  Any talk beyond this level, except for general comments, should be done via PM I think.

5" is good.
Most of the bowie designs are just way too big to be usefull in anything other than fighting and gutting a T rex.  I find even a Ka Bar too big for real field use.
I'll zap you a PM.

Anyway, I don't buy any non users. Everything I buy will get used sooner or later.
