how to remove scope base
« on: August 27, 2003, 07:54:34 PM »
I have acquired a Winchester M67, rechambered in .22 Mag (why I don't know) and sporting a nice vintage Lyman Super Spot target scope in 20X.
I'd like to take the scope off and find a more appropriate rifle for it or just sell it.
How do I remove the bases from the barrel. they appear to be silver soldered on?

Firstly, that's not a safe rifle to fire.  It was never designed to handle that kind of pressure and the bore is sized for 22 short, long, and long rifle ammo.  The larger bullet diameter of the 22 mag would create a huge rise in pressure.  The only way to remove the silver soldered based is to heat them until the solder runs.  If it is indeed silver solder I would recommend an acetalene torch to apply the heat.  It will produce a lot of heat in a hurry, minimizing the heat transfered to the rifle.  If your interested in getting rid of the Lyman send me a PM....  Good luck from the gunnut69

thanks for the advice. should I keep the flame mostly on the barrel?
Will the flame damage the blueing of the scope base?
I can't imagine why (years ago) that someone would reline a M67 to .22Mag. I bought the scope from an elderly gentleman, it just happened to be attached to the M67, which was free. The scope had been in storage for years and had layers of grime but when cleaned has perfect optics. Seems most people I've met who own one of these Super Spot scopes have them on Winchester M52's. I don't own an appropriate vintage rifle to put the scope on at the moment (considering a #2 Remington in .22 I own) , If I don't mount the scope on something I may decide to sell or trade in the future (been lusting for a Marlin Cowboy in 38-55)
I appreciate the advise and offer.
thanks

It should be possible to remove the scope before attempting to remove the mounts.  I would hope that silver solder was NOT used.  It can require a lot of heat to loosen.  To much heat can damage the blue but keep the heat on the mount base, it's much easier to reblue.  If the rifle has been relined it may not be totally dangerous, but I'd have it checked.  The M67 action was never desinged for magnum pressures even if the liners bore was the correct size I would be very cautious.  Take the scope off the rifle before attempting the base removal..  I have a SuperTargetspot..  I bought it for an early M52(pre A) but ended up with it on an old M54 Winchester in 22 Hornet.  I had a receiver sight on the M54 and it worked quite well, but haven't gotten to work with it after the Lyman was installed..  good luck and keep me in mind!!

PS--too much heat can cause blue damage..and may release the liner!
