how do I put sling studs on Ruger 10-22 synthetic stock
« on: February 05, 2009, 09:03:19 PM »
Hi,I have a Ruger 10-22 that I want to put a sling on and am a little befuddled about how to install the sling studs on the buttstock. The buttstock is synthetic and is hollow and there appears to be no way to access the rear of the stock to put a piece of wood inside to give the stud something to screw into.I have had some say to just put a regular wood screw stud into the stock and that would hold but I cant for the life of me imagine that would be very sturdy ,it seems like that would hold right up to the point it either pulled out or split the stock and pulled out. I would appreciate your help on this subject. Thanks ,Craig

I've installed the sling studs that come with the screws on a couple of my rifles. They went in pretty solidly and I've never had a problem with them.

I have never looked at a Ruger stock, but the couple of synthetic stocks I have installed slings on had a molded rib that runs the length of the stock and gives extra material for the wood screw to hold on to.  I even used an adhesive like silicon caulk to hold things in place.  I have never had one come out.

Ditto.
Ours was my son-in-laws Savage model 93 (also hollow) and we drilled a small pilot hole in the butt stock & put the common sling stud screw in place and it has remained solid. We figure that if it ever did loosen up it would be a small matter to patch it up w\a little auto body filler then give it a shot of flat black paint after sanding.
