why don't more people
« on: February 06, 2009, 02:39:49 AM »
try finding a scope that is short. so that you can grip the rifle at it's natural balance point. like those ones with the 20mm oc end. just wishing there were more options that way. the leupold ultralight looks great but i can't afford it
every day is a gift. use it well

Because the magazine writers and some self styled internet experts have convinced everyone that if you don't have a 50mm or larger objective and at least 16 to 24 power at the top end you can't see to shoot those deer way off out there 100 yards or so away like most are shot.

Isn't that the truth.  I think that most deer hunters would be well served with a 3 or 4 power fixed.  Less chance of shaking loose, much cheaper, less shake when aiming.

On the other hand, why are so many scopes too short to mount on a long action without using extension rings? Not every rifle has a short action.

Seems I read somewhere that the avg distance for whitetail in USA was around 58 yards!

Someone correct me if I am wrong.

I wish my eyes allowed me to use open sights, I hate looking through glass to shoot whitetail. I love my 2x leupold scout scope.

Short or long, somehow I don't think scope makers considered their products as carrying  handles  ;)

carrying handles? i just meant that if the scope didn't extend beyond the barrel nut - savage - then you can carry it where the rifle balances, at the barrel nut

I misunderstood what you meant. I have two Savage Products, one is a Stevens 200 and really don't mind having the scope covering the barrel nut. It is not the most pleasing looking part on a Savage. IMO

I had to go to a 1 piece mount on my Savage 110 to mount my Nikon Prostaff.  Now, I actually like the 1 piece except for the inconvenience in loading, but I still think I should be able to use a 2 piece if I wanted.
