S & W 686 scope mounts and scope

I just bought  a 686 with a 6 inch barrel  357 caliber. what kind of scope would you put on it if any.

For hunting I'd use a 2X either a Leupold or Bushnell. For a variable if you feel the need for more magnification I'd go with a Bushnell Trophy 2-6.

you  ever  use  a red  dot??

you keep both eyes open [not like a scope]

great in the dark [unless you close one eye]

eye releive  is  a non-issue

I have had scopes on handguns for some time. I used them for testing ammo and deer hunting. They were quite satisfactory.

However, as I got older my vision started to get worse. I tried a Red Dot sight and now have Red Dots on most of my revolvers. They have given my my best performance yet. Here's one of my handguns with a Simmons 30mm Red Dot:

No matter if I use a red-dot or scope on my handguns, I keep both eyes open.

I have hunted with scopes for many years, I also have with open sights and red-dots.

I find the red-dot to be a great alternative to the scope and iron sights. Quick target accusation and fast. I use and recommend Ultra-dot red-dots.

I still use iron sighted handguns, and scoped handguns, but I would say 70% of my handguns wear red-dot sights.

I just installed a Weigand mount and a Ultra-dot on my Ruger GP100 6 inch. I got it sighted in today at 25 yards, as soon as it warms up a little, I will head to the outdoor range, and get it sighted in at 50 yards.  With my 357 Mag, I limit my shots to 50 yards, if I want to shoot past that I get a bigger gun.

If you are sold on a scope, a Leupold 2 X would be my first choice.

Not to feather my own nest but I have a base mount from a 586 that I used to have, and scoped.  Would help a fellow shooter  out if you want it and its not against the rules.  By the way It wore a red dot and would shoot minute of golf ball at 50 yards, way cool.  SN

I have been watching this thread for a little while.  I wanted to scope mine too, I was at the store and got the base for the 686/L frame and then found after removing the sight found that it was not drilled and tapped.  I am considering getting it done but found one on Midway that appears to use the rear sight slot and then clamp to the barrel.  Are these type any good or should I get it drilled and tapped.  Sorry, to hijack the thread but no one mentioned these yet.

Matt, I tried the B-Square clamp-on mount on my Blackhawk 41Mag and every time I wanted to shoot it the POI would change and have to be tweaked to put it on target.  Someone told me it wasn't the mount moving but rather the rings not holding the scope securely, but I don't know.   I bought and mounted the Weigand mount, drilled and tapped the top strap myself (not rocket science but not for the novice) and the scope is rock solid.   If you are not up for doing the drill and tap work yourself it would be worth your while to have it done as it is the real deal and you would not be sorry.

thanks, for the help.  I tried a B-square once and will never have another one of there products period.  My post is on the rimfire pistol forum about them, I believe.  I have drilled and tapped before, but I don't think I will do it on a gun.  I will have it done.  Any guess at what the Average cost would be for this kinda of job?

I had a mount installed on a pistol a few years ago and it was $10.00 per hole drilled and tapped.  That can vary, and by location I am sure it will go all over the place.

The mount I mentioned uses two of the the factory holes and you D&T a third.  Cost me 20 bucks to get it done and it never shifted in the three years it was together.  My tastes and income changed, guns gone mount remains.  The best thing is when you do take the mount off and reinstall the sight the hole is covered and only shows from the bottom with cylinder swung out.  I hear the newer smiths already have the hole.  SN

My 586 wears a B square clamp and rear sight mount. After hundreds of round its still on target.  Never varies,  lots of lite loads but every once in a while I shoot full house loads.  So for its still zeroed.

I would definitely go for the Weigand base. The newer 686's are drilled and tapped.
