You're not being very clear Hauler. Sounds like you have a standard 44 special to me.

Two wild guesses:
1. Hot load ( if it does not appear to have been deprimed/resized )
2. Improper resizing method

Bill

Not deprimed and primer shows no signs of excess pressure.
I have 2 of them

I think they were shot in the wrong gun. I'm not sure what, one of the 45s?

I don't see how shooting in a 45 would build even enough pressure to swell the cases this much. How about 44-40?

I would think if shot in a 45 it would split the case
rather than expand it evenly ???

Looks like they had a bullet pushed down into them and then removed by kinetic puller?

You have a .44 fired in a .45 long colt. I'm a range officer. A shooter showed me his fired cases. He couldn't understand why he was getting such poor accuracy out of his Blackhawk. Embarrassed when I pointed it out. No harm, no foul and the cases don't split. Just fireform into the reverse bottleneck. I've picked up several 9mm's that have been fired in a .40 S&W. Again, the caes don't split, but I'm sure accuracy is nil. Have a good one.

Doubt the case has been fired in a wrong chamber as it is only expanded at the front. Had it been fired in a .45 Colt chamber most likely the entire length would look that way and it would probably have split.

My guess is someone ran a larger case belling die down into it. If it was run thru a .45 Colt belling die it would look just about like that. Don't ask how I know.

I tend to agree with reaper about firing in a .45 Colt. If the case was belled, I would think it had been sized. Why is it not deprimed?

I believe that the bullet has left the case and the pressure spike has passed by the time the case expansion reaches the web. Firing the cartridge in an oversized chamber doesn't allow full pressure to develop and the brass being somewhat elastic, doesn't split. I have a .41 mag case fired in a .44 maggie as well as 9's fired in a 40 S&W. These are all range pickups. If someone would point me to the how-to, I'll post a picture. Thanks.
