Myself, I like 300 and 325 gr. hard cast bullets in my 45 Colts.

Cast bullets IMHO are the way to go. I like 200 grain RNFP and Trail Boss for just fun shooting and plinking which is most of my shooting. Above that I go to a 270 SAA and Unique. My top load is the 265 grain Cast Performance 265 WNFPGC.

I shoot every weight in my 45 Colt Blackhawk from the 255 grain Keith on up to the 335 grain LBT.

I am very fond of the classic #454424 (265 grn Keith SWC) over 20 grns of H-110.  Hits hard and is very accurate.  Harvested a nice U.P. Michigan deer this season.  40 yard shot ventaliated both sides and took out the heart.  Deer ran 15 yards and piled up.

Venison stew tonight with home made bread on the side for dinner!
Thanks from the Frozen Northwoods!!!

That still amazes me…I don’t care who you are or how much I care about you, I would never let you kill my son.  I can’t even begin to understand how much He loves us.

Looking real hard at the 45 acp/45 colt convertable by Ruger. Had one some years ago but needed to sell it. On the Ruger site I see MSRP is $599.00. My local gun shop can get it thru Davidsons for me a lot cheaper. Just need to save up a few more Dimes, Nicals(sp), and pennys, and I'll have one. Might just get rid of my 44 mag.

The 4 5/8 inch blued Blackhawk 45 Colt convertiable is a very nice packing gun. It weighs about 8 oz. less than the same sized 44 Magnum Super Blackhawk. They are both great guns. I would not be so quick to unload the 44 Magnum though. I usually regret selling any of my handguns.

AK.Hiker, know what you mean about getting rid of a gun. It never fails you wish you hadant done that. The 4 5/8 is the one I'am looking at. Nice carry piece while out stomping thru the boonies and gold panning. Also nice for rattlers, something with 4 legs that thinks I should be lunch, or something on 2 LEGS that has decided to get STUPID. The 44 (redhawk with 7 1/2 bbl) kind of gets in the way ifin I'am out panning or playing with the sluice box.

I used to take my Dan Wesson 357 with 2" barrel concealed while fishing in South Fl.  Had a few potential close calls.  Started wearing it in a cowboy rig with the 8" barrel.  Only trouble was warnings from the Marine patrol about asking for trouble.  My reply was that even though I can legally conceal, I choose to advertize and avoid any misunderstandings.  The longer barrel never got in the way.  I do like the handling characteristics of my 4 5/8 Blackhawk 45 though.

The great thing about that gun is the extreme versatility that it encompasses. You can run from 180gr plinkers at 650fps for pop cans to 365gr bullets at 1300fps for hunting anything in North America. I have the same gun that I swapped out a Bisley grip frame on and it shoots 335gr and 365gr LBT bullets I cast very well. For general shooting I like to run a 255gr or 285gr Keith bullet at 850fps just for fun or trail work.

Look at data.hodgdon.com/main_menu.asp for great loads from mild to wild, your gun will handle any of the Ruger only loads if you want to red line your gun. But there is no need to and it is a lot more fun to keep your loads running 850 to 1000fps unless hunting big game. Enjoy your new toy...

Cayoot, the current mold from Lyman is only .452 diameter so the designation is 452424. Much to my dislike. Veral at LBT has the original 260 gr. and 315 gr. with original Keith outlines in any diameter you want.

I started with the 180gr six years ago I believe and they were the .4515 Sierra JFP. Just re-measured that target and I had an honest 1.338 five shot group measuring the outside edges of the two widest shots @ 25yds. Trouble was that they printed a good 6" low in my fixed sight. The old model Vaquero loves the 250gr, 265gr, and 300gr though.

The Mt. Baldy Bullet Co. is a good place to start. I suggest the 255, 265 or 270 for good starting loads and you can't go wrong with Unique.

Steve, I have 2 454424 moulds, one is an old Lyman 4 banger and the other is a custom group buy (put together on the Cast Boolits forum).  That is a 454424 Lee 6 hole.

I purchased a reamer and opened the cylinders on my Ruger Blackhawk.

Looks like you chosen a winner for a packin' pistol. Sky's the limit for bullet weights in the SA Rugers.
