Page 594 Speer 13th.

Unique = 5.5
700-X = 4.5
HP-38 = 4.5
Bullseye = 4.5
231 = 5.0

Unique gives 1111 fps and 231 gives 996 fps.  Everything else is in between those two.  All loads are using #9 shot.

Thanks, Bullseye it is.
I have almost 3# that I paid next to nothing for.
Now all I need is shot.

Was looking on midway
 :o $50.00 bucks for 25# of shot.

Wonder how many 38's I could fill with 25# ??? ::)

Think I will try to find a little less around town :D

Gohon,
I just remembered I have about 1-1/2# of IMR 700-X
I got when I bought most of my loading equipment
from the old guy across from my shop.
He always kept his powder in an old refrigerator so
it should be just fine (I will check it out) that would be perfect
for this situation rather than bullets.
Could you list the velocities for each powder if you don't mind?

Not that it really matters since they will mainly be used if I run
across a snaddle rack I cant back away from and friends who want the same.

Thanks
Mike

Stay with the lower velocities for best pattern. Even tho the "Best" pattern ain't that good!

 I loaded some up for the 38/357 a while back. I used H Universal, since I had it around. For shot I cut open a few #8 shotgun shells. Even if you wanted #9 I would just buy a box & cut open a few & have the rest to shoot.

I have never used the 38/357 myself but I have loaded some for my friends.
They asked for UNIQUE and #9 shot.
I myself have loaded and shot many hundreds in 44 mag, 44/40 & 45 colt.
All were loaded with UNIQUE as that is what I had the most of using #8 shot.
Before speer had the 45 capsules I loaded with a gas check turned upside down with great results.
Just don't shoot them inside a building.
Don't care for flying gas checks, and they are a little hard on the walls of a metal building.
As stated by Savage, keep with the lower velocities for the best patterns.
You will find that they will print in a half moon shape at the longer distances, say 20' to 30'.
I do have an old 10" TC barrel in 44mag with the screw on choke that has virtually no rifling left that will print a nice 14" to 18" pattern at 20' to 25'.
This has taken many rats and a few squirrel.

I have never used the shot capsules, in hand loads. But in the 45 colt I like Unique, and #12 shot between two 45Cal gas checks !! Shreds a tin can from 6-8feet.

The speeds for the different powders using #9 shot from a 6 inch barrel are:

Unique = 1111
700-X = 1060
HP-38 = 1054
Bullseye = 1021
231 = 996

Speer recommends nothing larger than #7.5 shot be used and the rule of thumb is one inch of spread for every foot from the muzzle regardless of shot size.

I just cut open 4-5 12 gauge #9 shot shells and still had a little left over after loading a box of 50.  Figured if I needed more than that for snakes I had better move somewhere else....

One word of caution..... I carry a little 2 inch barrel S&W .357 mag  when I'm out and about on the property and I have discovered the recoil from this gun will cause (sometimes) the capsules to move forward enough to bind up the cylinder.  Doesn't matter if they are my loadings or store bought shot shells.  Easy to push back in but I solved the problem by placing just a drop of super glue right at the point where the capsules enters the cartridge.  Doesn't seem to hurt anything.

For the 45 colt use 454 brass and gas checks, this will give you more shot capacity.
