TC Omega when you accidently leave the ram rod in the barrel after reloading.  Two black eyes and 5 stitches on the bridge of my nose.   :-[

This new BFR I got in 45-70 launching 500 gr. slugs.  It'll rock your world.

Man, I am so glad you posted that!

I can now admit it happened to me! I had forgotten that!

No injuries except to my pride but WOW what a recoil. that ram rod flew like a rocket. Says a lot for the TC omega. IT showed no sign of damage, still shoots great!

I don't normally shoot cannons, 338 and my 35 whelan are about as big as I can remember, and they were no problem. What I really didn't like to shoot though was an old lightweight Win 94. I have a Marlin that is no problem, but I just hated that Winnie for punching me in the jaw. After I found out how hard it was to clean compared to the Marlin, it was on the market in about a week.

I got to agree with Quick my 835 Ulti-Mag kicks the snot out of me with the 3 1/2" 2oz turkey loads and it ain't got a limbsaver. Next to that would be the 300 win mag it took three of us to sight it in before I sold it. Kurt

Here's some cold, hard facts based on physics, not how it feels, the 835 weighs 7¼-7¾lbs depending on the configuration, 2oz = 875grs, seems to me the powder charge in a 3½" load is about 40gr, the loads I shoot are rated at 1300fps, figuring on the high side for shotgun weight, recoil is 68.84lbs not including the wad weight!! :o You can draw some comparisons to other chambering on the second link below, the 378Wby is right there in comparison at 71.1lbs, but stock configuration makes a BIG difference in felt recoil, as I recollect the Ruger is one of the worst, the No 1 weighing 7¼lbs would have a little more recoil at 74.55lbs with a 300gr load pushed by 109gr of powder to 2900fps, the 460Wby tops em both with a whopping 99.6lbs energy, but neither is something you'd want to be shooting much of, I won't bench shoot the 835 unless it's in my LeadSled, I only shoot it standing with a tall bipod when patterning it!! ;)

Mosin-Nagant M44 carbine with Heavy Ball milsurp ammo.  Short, thin stock with a sharp comb.  Think 1'X3' muzzle blast, and getting slugged on the shoulder and cheek with a 10-lb sledge!  That gun gave me 'gun headache' every time I jerked the trigger.  I sold it pretty quick.

To recall a bad experience with a weapon is one thing. It can be funny.
TO CONTINUE SHOOTING A WEAPON THAT ACTIVELY HURTS YOU IS STUPID. Flinching is the least of it.
What is enough gun? The scandinavians routinely kill moose and bear with the 6.5x55. What is it about americans
that are always looking for the most powerful gun that they then shoot poorly or not at all. If american game has somehow evolved to withstand bullets please enlighten me. The reality is that many BIG GUN purchasers are really ignorant about guns and hunting. By the way magnaporting would improve the accuracy and recoil of most guns especially light handis and pardners.

A rebarrelled Boyes anti-tank rifle, rebarrelled to 50 BMG.God it was magnificent! But the worst ever was a .500 S&W Handi shooting the Winchester Platinum loads , 400's I believe. The sights took off after the 5th round and the barrel popped open too.My shoulder , jaw and neck were toasted for about a week!

My Moss 835 with 3.5" loads is pretty unpleasant. The Stock design on the Savage 24-F 30-30 over 12ga made for some misery when shooting 3" loads. But my worst has been the Ruger 77 in .338 WinMag from the bench. No brake, no pad and not enough weight. I think I'd rather be standing in front of it than behind it.

Mention of Lee Enfield .303s takes me back to 14 years of age, first rifle I ever fired in the Cadet Corp. Prone, they would really bash you, and I was bigger than most. Many of us had bruises. I have one now, and it is great for off hand shooting. The worst has to be a .300 Win Mag Ruger No1 off the bench. Far worse than a .375 H&H No1. - Pete

More of a surprise than bad recoil. When I was around 12 or 13 I had my first experience shooting a 45-70 trapdoor. I am left handed. Now think about it. A left handed shooter using a trapdoor with that big hammer spur and the rifle canted just a bit. The hammer spur ended up in my nose. That hurt!!!

As a kid I would ho hunting with my uncle.  I didn't want to feel unarmed so I carried my old Stevens 12 gauge (this gun was older than my bad when i bought it). No recoil pad... 30 inch barrel...
I bought some remmy slugs, thinking I was a serious deer hunter.  After the hunt, we were sitting around camp,  and my uncle said I shouldn't carry a gun if I hadn't shot it with the slugs.  I learned a valuable lesson as I picked myself up off the ground  ;D

Thanks for the link to the recoil calculator Tim.   Now it explains why my <6 lb Pardner Turkey gun is such a brute!   With the Winchester 2 oz   3 1/2"   load at 1300 fps  the recoil comes out to 90 lbs !  It sure puts turkeys on the ground but it is definitely a single shot experience!

As an additional hunt camp anecdote one of the newbies that declined to shoulder and pattern my turkey gun thought he would be macho a "pattern" it at 20 yds from the hip!    I advised him not to but he persisted and a few seconds later we were taking him to the emergency clinic to sew up the web of his hand between thumb and first finger.    That H&R hammer can be real nasty if you let it hit them wrong spot.

Worst I ever shot was a friend's restocked 98 Mauser in 30-06.  Buttstock had a really thin cross-section.  It was actually painful to shoot.

Biggest I shot was a .460 Weatherby and it would 'break' my left hand's grip on the forend with every shot.  But it didn't hurt.

CW, was that 460 braked? They say the 378 Weatherby has one of the sharpest recoils of any cartridge.

No neither one had a brake on it.

I shot the 378 a number of times but the 460 just once to say I did it.  ::) I do not consider myself to be recoil shy. But both of these are above what I will shoot again. I find the 375 H&H in a Ruger and CZ comfortable. Some of my 45-70 loads in the Marlin seem sharper to me.

I also had a BLR in 358 that had the most muzzle jump because of the crappy designed stock. Recoil wasn't excessive, but unless you had a vice grip on that forend. It would jump right out of your hand!! My pop shot that gun twice, the first time it "kissed" him nice. He almost needed stitches. Several years later, he tried again.. It still touched his brow!!!  No blood this time though.  ;D

for me, a siamese mauser in 45-70 loaded to scare a .458 and weighing 7.4 lbs, with steel buttplate(orginal military stock cut down)  I do remember using a 25lb. bag of sand between me and the rifle when developing loads off the bench.  After each shot  you could re-do you hair style.  When shooting off hand, many friends could not keep hold of the forend and would almost drop the rifle during recoil.  Yep it had recoil!!!!!  bill439

I once shot some of those 3 1/2" 12ga Commander slugs out of the 835 don't recall what the slug was but 1 3/4 or 1 7/8 oz slug and something like $22 a box (5) 5-6 yrs ago it didn't whallop quite as bad as the turkey loads but it was plenty enough that it didn't make much sense to pay $22 to get hit like that . Andy that is strange about your 16ga that light Wards Hercules 16 SXS I got is one of the sweetest shooting shotguns I own...gota be the stock design? Kurt

Here ya go guys, 577 T-Rex, well over 150lbs recoil, but the big kicker in shoulder fired sporting arms is the 700 Nitro with over 230lbs recoil with top loads!!  :o

Well I'm not recoil shy by any means , I do do 60 to 80 round sessions at the range with the ruger 300 mag on a regular basis ( rounds wt. 150 to 220 gr) I also have put hundreds of rounds down range in a day out of my old porteguise palace gaurds 8mm mauser and it only hurts when i lean to far into it and it contacts my collar bone on firing  YEAH ! that smarts ...

I was helping my ex-brother in law sight in a Rossi single shot in 30-06 that my brother got him for Christmas a couple years back ( he bought a couple boxes of what wally world had left 180 gr)
And in all honesty boys that light crappy stocked gun got my attn. a good example of stock fit and function and felt recoil ( my rem 7600 gets shot all the time working up reloads) and is a far cry from that lil gun , another reason i traded that one i had in 7.62x39 that i had bought for my twin neices to learn on since it was just as bad recoil wise as a 243 or maybe a 308 in recoil.

I would have to agree with some of the boys .. Those Safari-Loads in the 45-70 can ring your bell .. But my worst recoil experince was 3" rifled slug shells loaded in both barrels of my stage coach SxS shottie and (I meant too ;) ) letting both barrels go at the same time , yeah its one of those with a hard plastic butt plate ... Yeah that got my full undevided attn. hehehe
But i needed to know what it would be like should both tubes go by accident  ( oh those were 3" remmie 1 oz shells for the record)  ;D

  Default

Saw you post before i was done Tim , Yup have seen that one on you tube ;) You can pretty much look at how their posture is when holding the rifle in the fire ready position and know its gonna be ugly
All I can saw is " THAT POOR DAMN RIFLE " HAHA

My dad has an old Winchester SxS shotgun with 2 3/4" chamber.  Dad is quite a bit smaller than I am and he has had the stock cut down to fit him.  My 1100 was giving me fits so I had ordered a couple of parts for it.  I asked Dad if I could borrow his Winchester to take goose hunting.  In those days you could load your own lead shot loads.  My loads were loaded to the max, with buffered shot, and even kicked hard with the 1100.  I touched off a few of those loads and that little SxS kicked me so friggen hard.  My fingers in my right hand were black and blue from the trigger guard.  My shoulder was sore from the short stock slapping me.  I tried to hold it close and ended up with black and blue marks on my face from my hand and the action smacking me.

A buddy of mine got a CVA 50 cal muzzle loader.  We were shooting it one weekend at misc debris left at one of the local shooting spots.  We had been taking turns and suddenly it was my turn again.  I said, "wait a minute, I shot the last shot".  "No you didn't", was the reply.  "I did."  OK, I liked shooting it, so I was not going to argue further.  I would take the next shot.  I laid over the hood of the truck.  Took aim at a can at about 50 yard and let go.  Smoke rolled out the forward end and I went over backward.  I didn't let go of the gun, and it didn't come apart, but it sure felt like it did.  My buddy had started to load it, and realized when he seated the bullet that he had dumped in two loads of powder.  About 220 grains of FFF behind a TC maxiball.  It's a wonder that gun didn't come apart in pieces.

There have been some guns that I have shot where the recoils were worse, but they were expected.

Steve :)

My 835 Ulti-mag with 2oz Kent Bore 3½" turkey loads, it's no fun even with the Limbsaver. :'(

Tim

I'll second the Ulti but with 3 1/2 2oz Hevi's
Next is my Long tom classic with 3"ers
And at one time that wicked little 243 Win Model 70.  Shake my head everytime I think about that one.  I still hate it.  Thank goodness its my sisters! :-[ :P
I've gotten some green skin from my Dad's Browning 86 45/70 with metal crescent buttplate and 405's at 1800.  But its tolerable. ;)

Good thread!!!!

A few come to mind when I think of this.

Remington 700 BDL in 300RUM.  I had a limbsaver grind to fit put on it and bought a lead sled because of that rifle.

Marlin 1895 45/70 22".  I don't know what it was about that rifle, but it must not have fit me right at all.  It would beat me to death at every shot.  I had a grind to fit put on it as well.

Any 12 gauge shotgun.  Every year I double check the scope on my cousins 870 for him, and every year I'm glad I bought that lead sled.

The sad part is, I would like to get another 300RUM & 45/70 some day because I'm still fascinated by those calibers.  I'd just buy them in a different configuration next time around.

My 12 gauge shorty Pardner shooting 3" magnum slugs.
It weighs 4lbs. 15oz. and recoil is real stiff.

Spanky

I should weigh my synthetic 30/30 Handi with the 12ga Tracker II barrel on it.
In fact, I think I'll do that right now. There's no weight in the stock (and I don't think my 45/70 synthetic has a weight either).

Well, my HandiTracker is heavier than I thought, within an ounce of your Pardner. Still would be an attention getter with a 3" slug.

nicholst55,

My son's first purchase was a Mosin Nagant M38.  It's even lighter than the M44 because there's no bayonet.

After the first range session, I got back into handloading.  Put together some 'reduced recoil' loads for him using the Hodgdon's formula.

He's in the Army now, but still likes to take it out and blast off some milsurp - just to see that fireball!

I had a 20ga O/U that would occasionally fire both barrels!  That was the worst I've ever felt, mainly because I wasn't ready for it.  It got traded for a Mossberg 835.

And speaking of stock design, I got recruited to sight in several of the family rifles before deer season one year.  I had a Win 70 30-06, a Ruger 77 7mm Mag, and a Browning BLR .308.  Of the three the 7mm Mag felt the easiest on the shoulder, followed by the 30-06, but that BLR knocked the snot out of me....light gun, straight stock, hard wood.  Not good for recoil absorbtion.

For me it is not so much the rifle as the load.
The little Ruger No. 3 with the 500 grain Buffalo bore loads @1650 FPS.
Same rifle with the Rem 405 JSP are a pleasure and cowboy loads are cream puffs.
My 375H&H is bad from the bench but just a big shove off hand.
