Dad has an old Ithaca M66 single shot slug gun in 12ga that's so light it beats the snot outta ya every time you pull the trigger.  It's so bad, its been in the far back of the gun safe as long as I can remember.

I think the fit of the rifle has more to do with it than people give it credit for.  When I had my marlin 1895 in 45/70 it had a pistol grip and a 22" barrel.  It fit me like a glove, but it beat me like a hammer.  I started talking about it with a bunch of Marlin guys and several of them talked about shooting similar or hotter loads and it not bothering them at all.  I didn't get it because I'm around 250# depending on the last time I had pizza and some of these guys were under 150# and taking the recoil just fine.  I'd still like to get another 45/70 someday, but I'll probably never do it just because of the memories.  My shoulder actually starts to hurt when I think of getting another 300RUM.

Magnum turkey loads or maybe them slugs outta a 12 guage is prolly the worst shoulder weapons I ever popped a cork with, But I think that 5"-50 naval gun I pulled the trigger on is a little more than that I think. Heck iffn yer out on deck when they lite off them popguns the muzzle blast will about pick you up and toss ya overboard. Radar guided destruction. :o

Three guns come to mind.
My GRAND DAD'S old Stevens NITRO SPECIAL 12ga when I was 9 years old. Knocked me completely over backwards.
My old original REM Rolling Block Calvery Carbine in 43 Spanish with 385gr lead and compressed BP loads, 78gr 2F with a steel butt plate.
Last was a 7mag in a Ruger 77 with that stupid gray cutaway stock.
Not that the 7 kicked that bad but that stock should be thrown in the trash!

The worst for me is my pardner 12 ga with a 20" barrel and 1oz slugs.  I have never hurt so bad in all of my life from shooting any other gun.

Sears and Roebuck Long Tom in 12ga

Have seen several of the shotguns and 3 rifles by the same name but never had the chance to shoot one, not even my GRANDDAD'S rifle.

Hence my avatar.

I keep seeing you all pick some old single shot from your child hood.  I still have the Iver Johnson Champion my father's friend gave me.  It's the first gun I ever shot.  That little 20 used to smack me around the trap field getting ready for a hunt of some kind, till I got the Stevens 311 in 20.
Well not too long ago I pulled out the old champion and shot a round of trap with it before I moved north.  recoil was not bad.  I had to flip a coin if I were going to take it or my 20ga red label quail hunting back in October.
Dig out you old singel shot and have some fun.

For me it was a 12 ga slug gun. I shot 2 and both kicked hard i was young at the time about 15. I dont know if its the fact that i was young or they just kicked that hard.

#1 would be a 460Wby Mag and #2 would be an older Savage 110 30-06 that had tight bore

Don't believe my age had much to do with it. Last time I shot that gun I was 17 or 18 and it still kicked the snot out of me. The long Tom just had no weight to it so. Didn't help that it wouldn't pattern with anything but #4 shot.

Geesh, I'm so glad I'm not the only guy here complaining about shotgun slugs.  I've thought about switching over to a semi auto just for the recoil reduction.  Probably never will though because I don't use a shotgun for anything.

Best laugh I had all day - thank's for posting the you-tube video Tim.

I never dreamed my 700 N.E. had some 230 pounds of recoil!!! No wonder i cant get anyone else to shoot it.

The 3 worst kicker's I've shot was a Parker Hale 7 mag,and Handi in 45 70, a Mark 5 in 460 Wby. the Wby was braked with a 500 gr. bullet at 2600 fps.The Handi kicked me black and blue with the Win. factory ammo.Thats the first time my shoulder ever turned blue and green. My 300 Wby was tame compared to the Handi.    Digger

I have an Ithaca model 37 (weighs in at just over 6 pounds) that will bruise my shoulder after 3 rounds shooting at a tin can with "high brass". When sighting in for slugs (which are brutal), I use a sand bag between the gun and me other wise I can bruise my shoulder after one round.  I do not notice the recoil if I am shooting at game however, be it slugs or shells. I have literally shot a box+ of high brass #6 shells at Quail in a day and never noticed recoil. I would have to say that that model 37 and slugs is as much as I want to handle.

In short, many years ago, i think back in either the 50's or 60's, my dad stopped by for a visit at the H&H gun firm, where he ordered a brand new double gun in 700 nitro express - at a cost of over $40,000 and after a 3 year wait, he got a letter telling him that it was fianaaly finished. Since he was a pilot, he and one of his buddys flew over to pick it up and got 30 rounds of brass to go with it. I'm 6 ft. 9" tall and weigh just over 400 pounds (no, i am not fat) and this is one beast that will get your attention when you pull the trigger. I have taken it to Africa twice and my dad had taken it 3 times. Hopefully, my dad and i can do an African hunt this year, our first african hunt together and besides a few back up weapons, this 700 N.E. will be our main weapon of choice. Dad is more picky about this 700 than any other rifle he owns but, i'll ask him if he will let me tke some pictures of it to post on the forum. No promises though but i will ask.

Dang... why would you keep anything that hurts to shoot?  I'm sure turkey can be killed with something that doesn't hurt you too.  Ducks, geese, deer, black bear and pretty much everything else but about 6 animals in the world can be killed with lighter loads and heavier guns.  Shoot, even the Big 5 can be taken effectively with a 10-11 pound .375 that won't beat you up too bad.  I got stupid and bought a .376 Steyr Pro Hunter.  It's just about equal to a .375 H&H but it came in a 7.25 pound rifle.  After 14 shots I put it away.  I still have shoulder problems.  It now has 1kg of #9 lead shot in the butt and is much more well behaved (it's for sale now as well).  With the shoulder problem I even added 1kg into the butt of my Tikka .308 Lite.  I CAN take it out for stalking but I normally leave it in.  I'd rather carry a 9 pound rifle than have more rotator cuff problems.

TC Omega when you accidently leave the ram rod in the barrel after reloading.  Two black eyes and 5 stitches on the bridge of my nose.   :-[

Man, I am so glad you posted that!

I can now admit it happened to me! I had forgotten that!

No injuries except to my pride but WOW what a recoil. that ram rod flew like a rocket. Says a lot for the TC omega. IT showed no sign of damage, still shoots great!

If I'd been shooting without a scope I would have been fine.  My Omega wasn't damaged either.  Shoots tight as ever.  I found the ram rod the next day 200 yds downrange against the berm.

Man I had forgotton that! Probably from the embarassment. At first I thought I had double charged it .

When i looked up and saw the ramrod sailing like a cruse missile I realized what I had done!
It aint something you brag about if you know what i mean  ;D

It also aint something you wanna do very often.

I did see it in a movie once, the guy was reloading and an injun snuck up on him and he got the ramrod and the bullet.

I remember that movie.  I was a kid then and since it worked so well I asked Dad why don't they just shoot the ram rods more often.
Dad's reply was..."how are you supose to reload your rifle with the ram rod in the enemy?  And if an arrow was better than a bullet out of a rifle we would be shooting them".
Now I find out that it adds to the recoil.  Good to know.
I can tell you that 90 grains of Pyrodex RS with a 525 grain .577 minie ball out of a Zuave does not feel good either.  but 70 grains with the same bullet is not bad.

I must apologize for my mistake - the gun is a 600 Nitro Express and NOT a 700 Nitro Express! My dad corrected me on that one as well and i still cant believe i put "700" instead of "600".

Rex and LaOtto, yeah the Ithaca 37 and, in my case, a Marlin 336T .30-30 slap the snot out of me.  When I'm hunting, I never even hear my Handi .45-70 go off.  I read about people touting .30-30s as low recoil and good for the kiddies..........Not in a levergun with 170 gr. factory loads..........my shoulder and cheekbone can tell ya! :'(

600 Nitro Express Double Rifle no question.

A friends dad has one and we decided that we could handle it. The rifle was made by Holland & Holland I do not remember the load that was used.

However, I have never forgotten that Rifle kicked the everloving snot out me.

Would never own one ever...give me a .338 or .375 for anything that walks. The law on .40 caliber or above for Africa is not revelent with todays loads that are available.
