The worst was my 12GA Baikal double cut to 18.5" barrels and pistol gripped. Dumbass me tripped both triggers with 2 110gr 1oz black powder loads. The recoil was so bad it drove the locking lever over 1/2" INTO the web of my hand. The whole hand was numb for a bit. Didn't bleed a lot, but there was a lot of damaged tissue I had to cut away.

The SECOND worst was an H&R single shot. (DUH! everyone knows they SUCK for recoil!)

Either one would be GREAT to give to one of those He-man tough guys who say they can shoot anything. The Baikal will make him cry like a baby! :D

..oh! and NEVER, EVER fire a 50BMG rifle without a brake! You will damage stuff. I asked the MFR who made mine. That's what he told me when I asked. I took it to heart.

For me it was about 25 years ago when I was shooting a T / C 54 cal. Renegade muzzleloader off a benchrest.  Only problem was on top of the 120 grs. of FFG was a 530 gr. slug and a solid fiberglass range rod about 36" long that I forgot to take out of the bore before firing.
Good thing it did not blow up on me ! Cool thing was that the ramrod went right into the black center of the target at 50 yards and shattered into a bunch of pieces and ragged fibers.
After getting " DRILLED " by the gun I looked over at my friend that was on the bench to my left watching , after calling me a few names I can't print here we had a good laugh.
One of those things I hope I don't ever do again.         Jedman

That is  what happened to me. The only thing i could think of was, I thought I put it in the slot and put it in the barrel instead. But when I popped that cap it popped me right back  ;D

I have a lot of milsurps.  With a C&R license, I own most of available surplus rifles.  Moisin-Nagants in every possible length and configuration, Mausers, K31s, you name it.  The worst recoil award bar-none goes to Steyr-Mannlicher M95 in 8x56R.  This is a light little carbine that looks so innocent.  2 clips (10 rounds) and I'm done.  I'm not a little guy by any stretch (6'4", 250) but that thing kicks!

Bar-none, a short-barrel 10ga H&R turkey gun. Get some special turkey loads from Nitro Ammunition Co. These special shells are loaded with 2.25 oz. shot at 1200fps from a 24" barrel. Kicked so hard the gun came open on   every shot. Patterned good though. I really think that if you had your shoulder against a tree for support, the recoil would dislocate your shoulder or break your collar bone. Absolutely not for a small framed person.

My Pop bought two identical Interarms rifles.  One a 270, the other a 375 H&H.  One day while shooting he handed me what I thought was the 270 to "finish fine tuning the scope".  "Already loaded", he said.  I got into the sling, leaned forward on the bench, very tight, squeezed the trigger, and  took the scope off with my forehead.

I've may have shot worse, but if so they didn't hurt as bad.....

My 10/22 with stingers is pretty rough. Added a Limb Saver and it cut it back by at least 50%. Not that bad now. No flinching.  ;D

The first gun I ever bought back in 1975.....an F.I.E. single shot 12 gauge shotgun.  I bought it new at Woolworths for $49.95.  It kicked like a drunk, crazy mule!!!!!!!!

:) Howdy! Back when I was about 11 years old, Daddy let me shoot his 30-06 mauser.  To me I could not imagine a gun kicking any harder than this one. I avoided it for a couple of years, but found it to be reasonable on recoil with the 150 gr loads, etc.  When I was about 16, I found a box of #4 buck 12 gauge shells that my grandfather had and with some friends and Dad's permission I took the double barrel shotgun with these shells to the country to target practice, etc.  All Dad said was, "your just going to be shooting at the wind with those."  At the time I did not know what #4 buck was. Actually, I just thought it was a box of shotgun shells that cost 4 bucks.  Well, after shooting a few cans, etc. with those shells, I could not imagine why anyone would want to hunt with a shotgun. Talk about recoil!  Wow!  Anyway, when I got home Dad explained it all to me and so I went and got some #8 lead shot loads a few days later, after the bruise on my shoulder healed.

Happy Trails!
Always,

Oddly enough mine was a 7mm Mag Win. M70 that wasn't headspaced correctly. Sharp is all I can say!

Personally, the worst is a Russian PTRS-41 ATR. For a deep severely aching shoulder, fire off three shots of 14.5mm X 114m. 990 grains of lead at 3300fps. I understand though the Finnish L-39 Lahti is even worse, firing a 20mm X 128mm round. I want no part of that monster. I prefer to limit my hard kickers to the 300 win Mag, The 338 Win mag, My 18" barreled Icatha M66 lever break 12 gauge that takes 3" shells and my 500 S&w Handi. Probably the worst I saw was my son accidentally discharging his grandad's Savage 311 with both barrels. Sat him down right proper like.

Years ago I got involved with a Winchester model 88. This one was a .308, and I later I had occasion to shoot a .284. I am guessing that the stock is too straight with not enough drop. I have avoided shooting any model 88 in any caliber ever since.

This picture gave me an idea that worked great this past weekend turkey hunting.    I usually cringe at the thought of touching off the 3 1/2" 2 oz turkey loads in my NEF shotgun, but this time I did it in a small rocking chair!   Guess what - I got shoved back and started rocking in the chair but no sore shoulder or bruises.   This will be the only way I fire off the turkey loads in the future.

That's why I shoot standing with a bipod for support when I pattern those big turkey loads, it helps.  ;)

Heck, the skids are for dragging it to the next battle with a pair of mules, if it kicked that bad it would have an anchor and chain in the front !  ;D

We have an 88 in 284, with close to max loads its not fun off the bench but for what it is its not that bad.

I dont really know what the "worst" recoiling shoulder fired gun I have shot is, my 450 Marlin or 500 S&W both Handis thump pretty good (max loads or close to it), those are the only two that I can think of that will consitantly make me step back when firing from the standing postition.  I think the 500 has been the only rifle to give me a bruise, that was after 40 rounds though.

The worst recoiling handgun I have ever fired was a 475 Linebaugh, it was custom built on a Ruger BlackHawk, it had a short barrel 4" maybe a bit longer.  I fired a cyclinder full and I was done shooting handguns the rest of the day.  I have shot 500 S&W's long and short barrels, 480 Rugers, my 454 Casull and nothing compares to that 475, the owner said he doesnt shoot it very often without bleeding some where.

Worst I ever shot was 40 mm cannon out of a Navy Aircraft.  Didn't bother me a bit, but shook the plane.  I've got to agree with the Ithaca Model 37, had one in 16ga., just slapped the poop out of me.  Afer a day of dove shooting, I was ready for intensive care.  I too believe it is the thin, straightish stock.
