rechambering a T.C Contender to 30-30 Ackley
« on: February 08, 2009, 04:42:19 PM »
Hi everyone ;  Iam looking for an honest gunsmith that can rechamber a T.C Contender 22 in. carbine barrel that is presently a 30-30 Win. and I want to  rechamber it to  30-30 Ackley Improved without someone trying to sell me something I really don't want.
For example like a different chambering along with custom dies and custom brass and of course a super-duper scope mount because the new chambering will kick like a mule and throw a normal scope and mount right off the barrel , this is what SSK Industeries tried to do , all I want is a simple rechambering of a 30-30 Win. to 30-30 Win  AI. I just don't have the time or tooling to do the job myself.

Can anyone help ?

                                                                  Thanks

This guy will do a fine job and only does what you ask for.  The 30-30AI is about the only AI you can do in a TC because you do not have to set back the barrel.  Personally I would just rent a reamer and do the job in about half an hour for under $75.00, but that is just me.  Larry

Hi Larry ; sorry I didn't get back to you sooner but I work 2nd. shift. I went on the link you sent me and found some real interesting stuff but now you got me wondering if I could do the job myself or just make an attempt at it and screw up a barrel beyond help, anyway Iam going to call the Island Smith tomorrow and just see what he has to say. Thanks for the tip.

I would think about doing it your self.  There are a few issues to doing it by hand.  Best way is to hold the barrel vertical so that you are able to walk all the way around it, then turn the reamer by walking around the barrel while holding down pressure on the reamer.  The real way to do it is to hold the reamer in a lathe and turn the barrel around the reamer.  Trying to turn the reamer with some power tool is sure to get you a bad chamber.  There is not too much metal to take out on the 30.30 AI so if you are careful it should be good.  The Islandsmith does have inexpensive rates however, and he does good work.  Larry

I'll second Larry's recommendation to do the barrel by hand yourself, I did my own H&R, very easy to do, the reamer can be rented from GBO sponsor 4D for less than $35 including shipping.  ;)

Tim ; during your last reply to me you had a really cool pic. of a 30-30 AI group using 125 gr. Sierra PH  using 38 grs. of somekind of powder, would you please send the rest of the load ,its about time to start getting some load data for the Ackley, I've got some great stuff for the plain ole 30-30 (130 gr.Speer HP, 31 grs. Re.# 7 ,CCI br-2 primer). Thanks in advance.
