Get Over It
« on: February 09, 2009, 07:44:38 AM »
I get tired of others bashing Taurus because they think they are cheapo's or inferior to some other precious high dollar custom handgun.  I had a guy on another forum say we get what we pay for... heck the price of new Taurus's are comparable to most other makes out there.  I know there are CS issues, but every company has CS issues in one way or another.

So I did a little research this morning comparing somewhat of like models in the .45 acp's.

Now if we are to talk price, MSRP:  $623.00 on the Taurus web site.

Lets check some prices here according to web sites because not all gun manufactures out there list MSRP just for referance http://www.ableammo.com with comparable models.

Glock 21 4" .45 ACP $568.00
Taurus OSS 5.25" .45 ACP $502.74
Springfield XD 5" .45 ACP $603.69
S&W 4.5" .45 ACP $664.02
Berretta Storm 4" .45 ACP $518.00
EAA Witness 4.5" 45 ACP  $419.30
CZ 97B 4.8" .45 ACP $738.25
Ruger P345 4.25" .45 ACP $463.49

So the argument about you get what you pay for is not the issue as you can see.  When you get to your local dealers they may be running their prices differantly than a gun store on the internet.

Now for those that just can't stand Taurus I offer this song by the Eagles

If you stick to the 1911 platform consider that what you get is more important that price. I have read that many of the budget priced 1911's are spot hardened instead of the entire frame hardended . That is why some do not offer their gun for high pressure rounds like 10 mm , some of the 38's and 460's .
Its all perception of value to cost to use . In the tupperware guns what does it matter ? they all seem alike.
In revolvers the lock work is not as nice as a colt , S&W or Ruger IMHO .
And they don't cost as much as the big 3 . So you get what you pay for .
I like Ruger and they come with a trigger that needs some work . They cost less than a S&W so to me i get what i pay for and spend a bit more to get what i want and still come out ahead .
all that said maybe Taurus has picked a market and are going after it . Maybe its not the high end but the bread and butter guns . the ones that most buyers get and use as a tool not an investment or art work.
If ya can see it ya can hit it !

The part of Taurus that I don't like is their resale value. Book value drops close to 40% from MSRP, with one that you mention in 100% condition. I have nearly doubled my money with some Ruger trade-ins but that's impossible with Taurus. If something doesn't hold it's value, there has to be a reason and that about Taurus bother's me.

As Ive said many times. My old Taurus model 80  .38 Spl has been beat to death, was made in '77, and will keep up with any Model 10 Smith ever made. My dad bought it for $50 and it is still running strong.

Never bought a gun for it's resale value.  Usually buy them cause they go BOOM!!!  And they sure are purdy all silver and gleamy and such.

I do have a my 454 RB, .44ulti mag, and my 605 .357 that I am losing lots of money on!  Those damn cast performance bullets and imr 4227 are costing me a bunch!!

I try and shoot as often as I can, and I know that by the time I am done even in one day, I would have a solid down payment on a new hunk o six shooter fly right out of the end of the barrel.  I mean, I could have something really pretty to sit in the safe and I could sell it down the road and actually make some money, or I can have a gun that I shoot the crap out of and at the end of the year I know I've almost bought the gun over again in reloading expenses!  Hell, I could quit reloading, quit shooting, and buy a really nice.....  uhm....  uhhhh....  (psst... hey.. guys, what the hell do liberals spend their money on?  just wondering)  yeah, one of those!  BUT, I would rather buy a gun I like, and try and suck every last penny of value out of it, till it's not worth money to me anymore.

And to the taurus bashers....   ;)

I've never owned a Taurus, but my son-in-law has a Judge 45LC/.410 with the 3" barrel and it was really fun to shoot. I really liked the the stock grips and the front sight.

Nice looking rig there, Corbanzo.

The only thing that looks like winter there is the leafless trees.  It's about -35 here right now, come and take a cruise on your bike! 8)

It won't as long as you don't super charge those magnum loads.
