If they were to make it with a .308" groove barrel without an excessively long throat, I'm definitely in. Much better bullet selection for reloaders and excellent accuracy potential. I really doubt they would offer this with all the military surplus and cheap ammo plinkers out there, but I guess I can dream. I believe Ruger made the m77 and the mini-30 with a .308" groove barrel, but only in the pre-1990 models and then they put a long tapered throat in them just in case someone felt they just had to fire cheap crappy ammo through them. Made accuracy just so-so with both bullet diameters. With a properly chambered, properly sized barrel, this is one of my favorite cartridges.

??? Perhaps the best way to get this one started off is dissension.  Just what is the appeal to this one ?

I have thought it would be a good candidate for a "rechamber" but it is not really a "308".  I have no

interest in shooting cheap steel Russian ammo.  But I'm gonna vote "yes" anyway cause we can't have too

many Handi barrels !  LET THE DISCUSSION CONTINUE !    :-\    Jim

all of you that want to shoot russian ammo, and have heard of or experianced fire-less strikes........
i have a proven fix for that. its not the barrel. its the receiver that needs attention.
as far as accuracy goes.....mine is dead on.
there is other tricks out there to solve your poor performance.
if you want to shoot russian commercial ammo thats all good.
then you need to try some handloads with .308 projectiles.
hardly any difference in performance, at least with mine!!!!!!!!
thanks for polling this ;D

Yes, I would buy a 7.62x39 accessory barrel, if it had a ".308" groove barrel without an excessively long throat", and if, "it would shoot cheap & surplus ammo". Do it right and I would buy a couple. If they are going to make something why not make it correctly so they would sell a lot of them?....<><....:)

For me, it would have to have irons and it would have to shoot wolf/brown bear and the like reliably and with acceptable accuracy.

If they could do that, I'd buy one in an instant.

i can tell you how to make it shoot anything you can feed it......
from russian to lowest alabama reloads.
it just takes a few $$
its called a titanium nitrate fire-pin with an extended strike tip
can be made at your local machine shop, thats if they have processor based cnc equipment.
the barrel is not the problem!!!!!!!!!

I have a 30-30 barrel already. I hand load most every thing I own so do not see that a 7.62 X 39 would be much cheaper to shoot and the 30-30 out performs the 7.62 X 39.

I handload for this cartridge, and can tailor loads for deer hunting using U.S.-made primers.  With a lightly-built 150-grain spitzer, it is a great low-recoil deer round. Those who don't handload will encounter the same issue that owners of the original 7.62x39mm Handi suffered -- misfires due to hard East-bloc primers.

out of many loading combinations, i found 20grs of imr-4227 with speer 130gr hp (.308)
to be the most accurate @ 2112fps.
had it fly'n alot faster, but the accuracy fly'd also........
great for yotes @ 100-150yrds ;D

If it doesn't shoot the cheap stuff that's all over the place then I don't see much of a point to it.  That's the most available ammo in that caliber.  Otherwise, I have many other options (many better options) for low recoil deer rounds.

...

Absolutely right.  For the same amount of money one can get the Remington with an excessively long throat.  Don't need another .357 Mag with an excessively long throat either.

WHY?  - for cast bullets with accuracy - right proportions of case volume to bore diameter and twist.

According to the Remington site, the 7.62x39 has the same energy as a 30-30 at 200 yards.   Same energy with less recoil?  What's not to like?   In addition, my Handi 7.62x39 is the most accurate rifle in my collection.   Other rifles in the collection would include Remington, Savage, Mossberg.   The only rifle that comes close is my K31.

aaaaahhhhhhh!!!
another proud owner of a 39 barrel!!!!!! ;D ;D
i have the same outlook on mine, much more accurate above 100yrds than the 30/30
with handloads or factory ammo.  even russian loads...
i've been try'n to tell these people, its not the barrel that won't shoot the russian stuff....
its the fire-pin design.......
but thats been taken care of on this end!!!!!!!!
and the 310-311 diameter.... the handi's .308 can't tell the difference
in accuracy.
i have infared scanned the chamber and barrel areas after shooting the russian ammo...
maybe 17 degrees more heat is generated with the 310-311 stuff.
thats not alot to worry about......
its a fun shooter......

Short throated .30 caliber bore and a 1-14 twist... SLOBBER...If they dont make them soon I'm having one made. Yes a properly loaded .30-30 will do more and with heavier bullets , but the '39 is a very fine round and alot of fun.

DOUBLE-30,
i could not agree with you more!!!!!!!
i have played mine with 80 to 200 gr
and it performs as needed to the right powder charge.
130gr speer @ 250yrds is the best performer with distance..
lets see a 30/30 do that ;D-------nada!!!!!!!!!!
its a fun round and its loading is versatile.......

....Yes, I'd jump on a 7.62 x 39 barrel like white on rice. I do much deer and hog hunting with a Saiga using Wolf 154gr. ammo. It's worked just fine every time. But I was noticing at another forum, the crew was hand loading heavy bullets in various break action 7.62 x 39. One fellow was getting about 1700fps with a 220 grain hornady RN. according to the ballistic program. He's overseas and is waiting on a chronograph to verify the velocity. But the ballistic program indicates he should be able to safely push it into the low 1800's at worst, right at 1900 if everything is perfect. I do not know what the expansion would be like. Certainly he could go with a soft cast lead bullet in that weight. He has taken three Russian boar with it so far though, so it must be plenty useful. I'd actually prefer to tinker with bullets from 150-180 grains though, maybe replicate a load like the old 190 grain 30 Remington load perhaps.......That would yield a very fine low cost deer getter.....

HEY, you got it go'n on dude!!!!!!
i've been throw'n 200grs @ hawgs
loaded at sub-sonic ratings......
@ 50yrds it will do ya .33" 5 shot group
at least thats what my handi-39 will do.
the most unforgiving round i've ever played with, unlike the 30/30.
played with them for years, and then threw the towel in ::)

Yeap, the short powder column of the 7.62 x 39 rules for tiny little groups. I've seem some ridiculous little ragged holes out of break/bolt guns using good brass and bullets. But even the El Cheapo Wolf gives 3.5-4.5" groups out to 100 yards in the definitely not precision Saiga. Plenty good for pork chops and back strap.

I voted yes as well. I have always liked the little Russian and would love to have another Handi barrel in it but with a good chamber. It's just a fun round to play with and can be useful, as stated by a few reloading books as an "in between round". Open sights would be nice but I wouldn't care as long as it was done right. I would probably buy 2.

every now and then when go'n after 250-300lb hawgs, i wish i'd had my 45/70
but 99% of the time i'm glad i have the 39!!!!!!!...excellent performer...
only for distant knock-down i'd use the 45/70.
but most hawg shots are within 50yrds. thats why i carry the 39 with HEAVY projectiles
my first choice when pork get'n...... ;D

I want the .311 barrel to shoot the lite bullets I got for my Enfield. With the throat & twist for the short lite bullet it would be great. I would buy a .30/30 if I want a .308, and still may. I just need to use up these .311 bullets!

so far, over 350 rounds fired with the titainium fire pin fix and not 1 FTF !!!
use'n commercial russian cheap fmj & hp steel cased berdan primed .310/.311 ammo $3.99 box stuff
(if you can still find it that cheap) ;D
and the accuracy is within 1.25"-1.50" @ 100yrds. some fly'ers to 2" every now and then.
but we all know why!!!!!!!.
accuracy with handloads is much better.

I found some small primer brass that have not gave me any ftf yet "neck sizing only". I have shot close to 100 of them with no problem. my 110gr sp .308 are shooting 1" maybe 1.5" 10 round groups at 100yds ;D I have 100 small primer brass and another 100 on the way. Im trying to get 500 saved up. Man i wish someone would build me a titainium fire pin ::)

check with your local machine shops, if they have cnc equipment, and the ability to
produce them.... should not be a problem.
i have found that if they are setup for aerospace machining, its a piece of cake!!!

Iv been a machinest for the last 13 years but have moved on to cnc programing now. I work at a place with around 200 cnc lathes and 75 mills but none are tooled up for small dia stuff. I was just poking at you a little. I have a few shops in mind that can do it. But as of right now its working out for me.
