Scope mounting options for Mauser 98 variant?
« on: February 10, 2009, 07:32:16 AM »
I have a Turkish model 38 8x57mm and want to mount a scope on it. Hoping to avoid a gunsmith as funds are short. What are my options? Scout mount is out because military sight band is removed. The rifle is somewhat sporterized already, it has a cut down 24" barrel, a peep sight, bolt bent, and shortened stock. Peep sight and my terrible vision are not going well together. I called a local gunsmith here in southeast michigan and he wanted $180 ball park to install a side mount... So the question is, are their any other decently affordable options for mounting a scope on this rifle. I am somewhat mechanically inclined so a small project I could handle. Thanks for your thoughts

Give a look at XS sight systems scout scope mount or maybe one of the no drill systems sold at places like Centerfire systems.

Ok so I found this no drill system that advanced technologies makes.

Question is, what on the mount would keep it from turning left or right on the reciever? I realize it has a set screw in the rear but am leery about it. Do you think it would work?

I've not seen one up close and the pictures always show it with the stock installed, But, I believe it wraps around the action some and may center up on the recoil lug, That would just be a guess on my part. I drill and tap all my old mausers except the ones I don't sporterize. The XS sight mount gose on with set screws and then you epoxy it where the old mil sights where I helped put one on a friends 7mm works great if ya like scout mounts.
