Older Remington ADL
« on: February 10, 2009, 01:04:38 PM »
Calling all Remington ADL owners. Hey guys first post here because just picked up my first Remington rifle. Got a 1996 (according to the date code) ADL .270 with Walnut wood stock. Ok, here is the question. Have been on the net half the day reading up on scope mounts and rings and not sure which ones to go with. I obviously want to mount the scope as low as possible. This ADL does have sights on it so I would need to make sure what ever I go with clears the sights. I do not want see through type mounts. Would be great to hear of some actual set ups that you guys are using on the same model rifle. O yeah, I will be mounting a Bushnell Elite 3-9x40 scope.

Thanks in advance for answering my questions.

Scott

Get the lowest mount your scope can handle.  Remove the iron sights and replace the holes with filler screws.  You can get the screws and the mount and recommendations at Midway.  Your ADL is a great rifle.  I have many.

Ok, never thought about removing the iron sights. Will have to look into that.

Remington sights are held on with screws so are easy to remove. Unless you are planning on some QD set up for the scope just take them off. I take them off all rifles I buy that have them but then most I buy don't even come with provision for them.

For Remington 700s I generally use one of two mounting methods.

If it is an '06 or heavier kicker I'll normally buy either Burris or Leupold dual dovetail base/rings for it. On long actions the Leupold fit better as the width between rings is a bit wide for a lot of scopes with the Burris set up. I do prefer Burris rings but this is one place I use Leupold and lap them.

On most all that recoil less than the '06 I use Weaver bases and Burris Signature Zee Rings.

I pretty much never use any other combination on my R700s.

Hey Greaybeard, any particular brand of Weaver style bases? Also what size Burris Zee rings do you use? I will be mounting a 3-9x40 scope.

Thanks

I agree with the Leupold Dual Dovetail bases and rings but you might also look at the DeadNutz bases and rings...I've used both systems on a 700 and they are solid...

If I'm not mistaken, DeadNutz is a sponser...

Yes Dednutz is a sponsor but if I can't figure out how to contact them about renewal they might not be much longer. I can find absolutely no contact info on who there asked for the banner. Weird I usually do a better job of record keeping than that.  ???

I use Weaver bases and Burris Medium Signature Zee Rings most often. They no longer make a low but the medium is "almost" as low as the original low was.

Thanks a lot for the info. I removed the iron sights today. Man they were hell getting loose!! >:(  I will go with the Weaver bases and Burris Signature Zee rings. Will the 40mm scope be pretting close to the barrel??

Thanks again,
Scott

You have a great rifle.  I use the Weaver 2 piece base, and I prefer the old style Weaver Tip-off low rings.  They are strong, inexpensive, and they work very well.  I see no reason to remove the sights, but each to his own.  You can see my mounts here.

I left the iron sights on mine.  I went with the see through scope rings. When I was hunting white tail in Nebraska I used a scope rifle. I came across a nice deer up very close and personal in a wooded area. I had some trouble finding the deer in the scope since I had it on 6X power, since I was looking for whitetails in farmland. With the iron sights and see through scope rings you can draw a very quick bead on something you encounter up close.
Hunting and fishing are not matters of life or death. They are much more important than that.

+1 for keeping the iron sights. just in case you have a scope failure at deer camp. if you have other rifles then that idea won't matter
