Making better use of your trapline animals- READ
« on: August 29, 2003, 04:09:38 AM »
Us trappers usually take in a fair amount of animals in a season and off comes the pelt, out goes the carcass. Did you know that there is a significant abount of value to the naked carcass you just dumped in a coulee? Looky here: you got the skull, the claws, feet bones, leg bones, pelvis, ribs, backbone, and tail bones. You also got toepads, anus, and various scent glands. What about the meat? Well I don't eat alot of the predators, but dang if the stuff won't make a powerfull bait! It also makes up some wopper lures as well! Get my point? Here's what I have been doing. I have been making a large wall unit of compartment bins for seperating all the various bones of various animals. Have plastic compartments and large jars to throw dryed toepad scalps in. Have a wire to hang and dry your castors on, Have seperate jars for animal glands. Have several good syringes for extracting skunk essence (keep the essence jars in a secure place unable to be tipped or knocked over!). Have a place for all your dryed and scraped beaver tails too. Better have those Porky hides scraped dryed and salted and ready for the crafters! Customize your own setup and what would work better for you. What is there to do this summer? Trapping season isn't for months, nor is hunting season, Hmmmm... I know I can sort through all of my bins and start a makin'! Lets see do I want to whip out the lure and bait recepies today or do I want to craft some unique and beautiful wildlife crafts to make some money? Hey, I remember that guy who kept calling me, desperatly needing Porky hides for quilling and was offering good money too, YESSS! I have them on hand now! What sir, you want Weasel ribs for a craft? Well yes, I've got them! Mam, you say you need what? Let me check...Yep, got them! Your a lure maker looking all over for large lots of what? Well I happen to have __ #s of it on my shelf! Ching, Ching! Better be ready to Cator, just got to invest a little extra time.        Huntrap
