Factory LRH rifles??
« on: February 11, 2009, 07:44:32 PM »
There is a big question that remains to be answered and it seems to be something that plagues all of the flat shooting standard length cartridges.
We have a surplus of "super light" and "ultra light" and "featherweight" and "mountain" rifles that all add up to light bbls, synthetic stocks and not a great deal to ameliorate recoil.
Some companies are building regular lightweight models that in popular cals like '06 or 270 are going to develop flinches in heaps of shooters just because the rifle soaks up so little of the kick.
In many places game require longer shots and this is nothing new.
Companies have recognised this with varmint, predator and tactical rifles in military and varmint cals which are, not so coincidentally, short action rounds.
But while some of these cartridges are ideal for most hunting, like 243 or 308, they are not necessarily popular for big game.
Why aren't companies making a standard action model that is a LRH......Long Range Hunter; chambered to 25-06, 270 Win, 280 Rem, 30-06 and some of the full bore magnums(7mm Rem, 300 Win, etc)?
With a heavy sporter or even varmint bbl and a Hogue or HS Precision stock designed for long range shooting a 25-06, 270 or 280 would be superb for nailing antelope or deer out to 400 yds.
With the exception of 25-06 the same design would make long shots on elk, moose or plains game in Africa much more accurate.
I'm not asking for a revolution but it's a good idea, wouldn't you say?
And with the longer range work in mind they could even chamber it in 280 Ackley Imp, a popular long range wildcat.
Nosler is even making factory brass for it these days.
Am I silly or do people think this would fill a real demand?
