ANY BEAVER IN YOR PLANS?
« on: February 12, 2009, 06:30:02 AM »
Was wondering who will be chasing beaver this spring.
What state are you in? when does your season end?

Last season hooked me on spring beaver trapping.  It was the first year that I put out a good number of traps and had reasonable success.

I am planning on heading out and trying to trap a few spring beaver, our season runs to March 31 (S. of hwy 64) and April 30 (N. of hwy 64).  For those that don't know Hwy 64 cuts the state in half and runs East to West.

To what extent I will trap depends some on how high gas prices go, what beaver sell for at NAFA's Feb. auction and at what levels they clearance.

Any idea as to when the beaver really start to move.  Here in wisconsin some of our rivers are starting to open but the ponds and lakes are still locked up.  Do the Ponds have to open before the move in good #'s.  How open do they have to be...foot or to around the edge or at the dam, just enough for them to "fly the coop".

Teal. Those beaver in the rivers can be taken now. Pond and lake beaver--start moving as the ice pulls away from the shore.
I will start setting lakes and ponds ,as soon as a couple of feet of open water appear. The beaver become very active, after being locked under ice all winter. A short time after ice out,the 2 year olds are evicted, this also causes a huge movement in beaver numbers.
Any way you look at it--spring is beaver season supreme.

Tom,

Thanks for the info.  How efficient is floating a large waterway for spring beaver?   The game plan would be to set castor mounds at all tributaries and periodically along the way.

You should do well with the floating.Don't be afraid  of gang setting hot spots. In many instances,I will make several castor mounds in a small area--I use my 2 beaver lures, and alternate between the two--at every other set.

Andy, I sure hope to be able to hit the north country. I may go wherever there are beaver that need thinning out. I am getting everything ready now.
For once, I want to be on top of things.

This is the first year in the last seven that I won't  :'(be trapping any beaver. Went and got myself one of those blasted hernia's and am just now getting over the operation. Hoping to get a few adc jobs in the near future though so there is still hope. Worm

I'll be going after them this spring.  Season runs till the end of April above hwy 64 and till the end of March south of 64. Hope the ice goes out south of 64 before that season expires. Have a few spots that I would like to try.
