Replacement stock for a Savage
« on: August 29, 2003, 08:11:04 AM »
Last year I purchased a left handed Savage ,stainless w the cheap plastic stock for my 12 yr. old in 7-08. It is accurate, he loves it but I can hardly stand to look at it. Do any of ya know where one might look for a perty laminate or walnut L.H.
                                       Thanks,
                                                        Pat

Hey, Animal!

For your left-hand laminated Savage Stock, try Richards Microfit Gunstocks in Sun Valley, California (Los Angeles area).

They have a website, and a big selection of do-it-yourself, as well as finished and ready-to-drop-in stocks.

John, none of Richards Microfit Stocks are already finish and drop in.  I just got my laminated stock and they say its 98% finish.  It thats 98% finish I hate to see one thats 90% finish.  I have had to do alot of sanding on it plus had to open in the inlet some, its turning into a beautiful stock, but it takes some work and time.  Its well worth the money I paid because its for my Tika Whitetail Hunter 270.

another thing to be aware of with the Microfit stocks, when thinking of getting one for a Savage (as i recently was, adn then for this reason passed),  is that the Microfit stock in addition to being unfinnished, are also missing the bedding pillars, that are built into just about every OTHER aftermarket Savage stock.  these pillars are part of why the Savage is able to be so accurate out of the box, thus unless you're super careful each time you remove and re-attactch the stock AND are damned lucky you're gonna need to either install the pillars yourself or have someone else do it..

so in other words, as nice and pretty as they become when nicely finnished, even if you don't nessisarily HAVE to have a drop in fit, you're MUCH better off going elsewhere.  b/c there's alot of work that needs doing on their Savage stocks.

not having a need or desire for a wood stock at the moment i can not give you any direct advice on who to go through.  if i did i would.

if you're NOT dead set on wood, the "Stockade" stocks over at lock stock and barrel are a good option.  a little more than the Microfit stocks but from all i've heard MUCH less of a PITA to get mounted right adn they ARE simple drop ins.

detritus is right, I have to pillar bed the stock myself, but you don't have allot of options with a Tikka Whitehunter.   For a Savage I would also go to lock, stock & barrel.  I put one on my son's Savage and its great, she shoots 1/2" groups (4 shots) at 100 yards in 308 caliber with heavy barrel, and a 2 lb. trigger job.
