62" baggage limit
« on: February 12, 2009, 12:39:45 PM »
I am planning a trip to SA in August, will be flying Delta the entire trip. I can't get a straight answer about if the 62" limit applies to gun cases. Has anyone flown Delta lately? The excess charge for being over 62" is $175 each way.

I don't have an answer for you as I don't fly and haven't heard of that rule. BUT if you are going to Africa and are planning to drop $10,000-$20,000 on the trip, the hunt and taxidermy I'd think that added fee would be about the least of your concerns.

We went to RSA, last July, and flew Delta, all the way.  There were zero issues, with our gun cases, and we took extra money "just in case".  Watch your weights of bags, I wouldn't get concerned about the size limit on the case.  We had a 2 gun aluminum case[my boy and I], no measuring went on.

Look on the Delta web site.  In the baggage section it lists the various exceptions to their rules on baggage dimensions.  Last I looked, there was an exemption on size limits for gun cases.

My daughter's rifle team just flew from Frankfurt, Germany to Detroit on NW last week.  They carried one full-length STORM rifle case each with no problems.  Not sure if they were over 62" linear inches or not.  Don't forget, linear inches is actually L+W+H in inches.

If you look into this and find the terms for a "sporting case" you will see they are exempt for a single case per person. I've flown back and forth to Africa well over 100 times and I have never been asked to pay anything additional for the size limit, only a charge for over weight.

Imagine how much more the airlines would make during the ski season if this was the case! Golf clubs would also exceed this.

Like I posted earlier... L+W+D = linear inches

Pretty easy hit 62"...

don't think it's really a big deal unless you get a ticket agent that is excessively anal and bent on cause problems for hunters...
