Ok I have had a .223 handi for a couple years and just really started to try to make it shoot really well. When cleaning it the other day i noticed that only the left side of the latch shelf has any wear on it will this affect the accuracy of the rifle.

More than likely, if it doesn't shoot well, return it to H&R for repair or fix it yourself using the barrel fitting info in the FAQs sticky.

I added a pic and messed around with it this morning after reading the barrel fitting in the FAQ's but i was unable to close the action with a soda can shim on the pin. However i also noticed that the right side of the pin hinge has little to no wear on it also so something is not square what would you recommend trying to do to square it up.

It sounds like the underlug isn't welded to the barrel quite true, if it won't shoot 100yd 3-shot groups inside 2" with factory ammo, return it to H&R for repair, they fix it, contact them and make arrangements for them to cover shipping, toll free 866-776-9292.
